BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

The Raconteurs

“(embargoed from sharing the title)” one-sided single

scums stats: WOULDN’T YOU LIKE TO KNOW?

Hard to believe I’m even doing one this week, but the collectibility has me all keyed up. Multiple covers? Multiple paper colors? Only given out to Ultra Ticket purchasers? SIGN ME UP.

Everybody is gonna want one, so let me just pre-emptively tell you…I don’t have any to spare!

You wanna place bets on the high price these reach on Discogs? Will anyone be able to collect ALL four?

Good luck to those trying, as you will need it.

You know, this song originally wasn’t going to be on the album. But Swank and I had to explain to the band how DAMN GOOD it was. It makes multiple statements that need to be made. The performance is tight…who even knew Brendan could DO that?

People who won't play the game the hard way, let’s do easy. Let’s give away a test pressing for commenters. You’ve got a week to get it in there. Tell me your favorite Third Man moment of the past ten years. I may use discretion or I may just pick a comment at random, so everyone has a chance.

my favorite 3rd man records memory is of anytime you’re doing something great for the community. Whether it be the blood drives for Red Cross or the food drives for the shelter. bringing us all together to give back makes me happy.

I would say the first time the Rolling Record Store came to Pittsburgh was a great moment. Standing outside in the rain just to say I finally got to experience it.

This past summer, my record digging side-kick Charlie Brown (that’s his actual name..actually it’s Charlie Brown the 4th, he’s forth consecutive named CB’s, he says he would have been the 6th but his Great-Great Grandpa “F**ked Up!”) visited Lansing and Detriot to visit friends and of course buy tons of records. After touring buying soul records at 4 record shops, touring Motown, we headed over to visit Third Man for the first time. Charlie spent 10 mins flipping through the store and then watching the pressing plant spit out records. He’s never seen how a plant works. He was so overwhelmed it all, he turns to us and said “this is too much, i gotta leave!” But i did get a cool picture of his bald head flipping through the Sun Singles display! We will visit again soon! Thanks.

Up until yesterday, I would have said that it was finally seeing Jack Live at the Armory. This has now been surpassed by the announcement that the Raconteurs are coming to Minneapolis in July. I love Jack but, please don’t hate me for this, I love the Raconteurs more. One of my favorite bands ever and thanks to the vault, I have already secured my tickets to the show in July. Had I known about this earlier, I may have purchased an ultra ticket. Considering I didn’t know about it, I hope you pick my comment to win.

My brother is 12 years older than me, so growing up with him I was around a lot of music that otherwise would’ve ended up being before my time, so I’ve had the white stripes and Jack’s music around me literally my whole life (my favorite was always get behind me satan). Last year me and my brother drove from florida to california to move him there for a new job and to pursue comedy and writing. The day we arrived happened to be the day Boarding House Reach came out, and we listened to it 3 times straight in the car that day as we explored LA. We never got to see the white stripes live, but later that year I flew out to visit him and we drove to San Diego to see Jack on the Boarding House Reach tour. That was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to, (and probably one of the best I’ll ever go to), they played a lot of our new favorites from the album and a lot of our old favorites (I was super excited to hear A Martyr For My Love For You) and every song in the encore was insane. Every second of that night blew my expectations out of the water, and sharing it with my brother was the best addition to it. We’re doing it again this year, I’m flying to see him in July so we can see The Raconteurs together at the greek theater in LA.

Last year for the Boarding House Reach Tour my husband and I were flying to Detroit from Atlanta for the shows at Little Caesar’s and Grand Rapids. We were still in Atlanta when the Cass surprise show was announced. Our flight was delayed and we arrived in Detroit at about 6pm and got in line for the shows about 15-20 minutes before the doors opened thinking there would be no way we were getting in. I stepped foot into the Cass Corridor show and spent my first hour in Detroit with Jack and friends for an unbelievable show. It was worth every second of running through the airport for. ❤️ Thanks Third Man for being so wonderful to the fans. The hard work is appreciated

My favourite TMR memory was when, with the french TMR fan community, we decided to create a compilation of songs recorded by community’s members to send it to TMR. Each member recorded a cover from a TMR artist and an original song. I don’t even remember what was the original song I recorded, but for the cover I chose to make one of Carolina Drama. It was one of the first time I tried to record songs seriously, trying to convert the small space between my bed and my desk in an improvised home studio and having hard time to try to get an old 50’s elctric guitar on tune. Of course it sounded quite horrible, but it is a great memory and I was so proud to know that it ended up on a cd that would arrive in the hands of some staff in TMR offices. Sometimes I still secretly hope that it didn’t finished in a trash bin and that it is still sleeping in a box somewhere. During this experience I met some very interesting and talentuous persons with who I am still friend and still working on some artistic projects, and it was a first step that led me to have my own band and record a real album.

My first trip to Third Man in Nashville in 2014. My 9 year old daughter recorded “Mercedes Benz” by Janis Joplin in the self recording booth.

Mine is just funny. My husband and I were at the opening at Cass Corridor. I was looking around in the back hall near Jack’s office door. I hear someone say "he’ll be out in a minute ". I thought OMG my big chance to have a brush with greatness! Well low and behold just seconds later he came out the door. My smooth move? I quickly noticed the bathroom door was open and I ran in and stayed there until he had passed. If I ever do meet him I’ll probably just wet my pants?
