So, we anticipated that you would be wondering with the rollout of TIDAL (the new high-quality, artist-owned audio streaming service that we are very stoked to support) -- "What does this mean for my Vault subscription? Don't get me wrong, I love it, but sometimes I just need a reminder, ya know?" Well ladies and gentlemen, here it is, in one succinct post.
Vault subscriptions include everything you've come to love: exclusive access to pre-sale tickets and early entry for Third Man-supported events and concerts, first access to Third Man news, audio, photo and video, contests, photo sharing, merchandise through the Vault member-only store (for Platinum members only) and a quarterly vinyl Vault packages (for Platinum members only).
Also, we are pleased to offer Gold and Platinum Vault members a new site-wide discount - something we've been planning for a long time. Now, when you're logged into your account, you can use the code VAULT10 at checkout for 10% off your purchase. Everyday. Certain exclusions do apply for specialty items, but for the most part, records and merchandise are now available to you for LESS without having to wait for a special sale to come around. And, of course, don't forget that you always have the opportunity to buy exclusive items in the Vault Novelties Store (cough, cough, Jay Z, cough, cough).
We are beyond excited to be founding members of TIDAL for our high-quality audio output, and to further support the artistic development of Jack, Jay Z, Daft Punk and the myriad other artists who are teaming up to realize this project. Hope that you guys are as eager as we are! Enjoy!
Thanks for the clarification, Cam. I think what’s thrown a lot of us off is the fact there is a rare Stripes video up on an official Jack site and we can’t see it unless we input our credit card info on another subscription service. But I’m not getting the feeling it’s anything greedy or nefarious or anything so I’m open to see where you guys are going with this. Vault rules, we should give you benefit of a doubt.
Hello, friends. It seems that the point may have been miscommunicated or missed, so please allow me a moment to clarify.
The Vault will still continue to give you everything we have been offering plus will continue to roll out further improvements and updates as the year goes on. The Vault is a work-in-progress, and we are always (really! always!) talking about ways to make the experience better and more worth your while. This project is our baby and we have worked very hard to bring it to where it is now. We have no plans to take away any features that have been previously available to you. There is more than enough content to work with. We’ll prove it.
We will be using TIDAL to give customers who stream music access to high-quality audio, while offering better compensation for ALL artists whose music is on the platform. That’s a big deal! And a necessary change in the music industry. TIDAL does have the capability to publish exclusive content, but this does not threaten the content you have access to as Vault members. Our artists will use this feature from time to time, but the overwhelming majority of our exclusive content will go straight to the Vault – same as it ever was. We love you guys, and we will continue to feed you the good stuff.
Being ignorant of any other announcements, news releases, tweets, posts, or decrees, I have read the “succinct” post above and all the comments rendered and I cannot help let the lawyer side of me fixate on the following:
… first access to Third Man news, audio, photo and video, contests, photo sharing, merchandise through the Vault member-only store (for Platinum members only) and …
I conclude that this sentence should be construed as to mean that Tidal will have exclusive content but we Vault members will still have “first rights” per se and will receive everything (and more) that Tidal members will. However, if I am erroneous, then I am in total agreement with shaneoftheroad, Kali, and the others.
We all joined the Vault to support Jack and his organization. I will remain optimistic for the time being until I am told otherwise…
Thanks for the discount on purchases TMR. What a great perk for members and what a great surprise. From what I’ve seen of the Tidal project it all looks great to me. I am all for the music artist and believe that they should be the owners and get compensated for their work. Jack is a very wise and savvy business man and I think it was a great business decision on his part to participate in Tidal. The $20 a month for it doesn’t bother me. The only hesitation I would have is that I never used services like Spotify or Pandora and I never really streamed music digitally. The very few times I did someone else streamed it for me. So I’m afraid that I’m not technically savvy enough for this service. But that being said, maybe it’s time to give it a try. Does Tidal offer trial memberships? I think if you like the service then get it and use it and if you don’t or have no use for it then just don’t get it. No need to post a bunch of hate just because you wouldn’t use it. There are many fans who would. Peace.
Also… The concept of Tidal is solid. Most everyone doesn’t have a problem with the Tidal project. Artists in control? Awesome. The only (stress only only only) point of hesitation is Vault members having to pay another sub service to access unseen/unheard material. Only, only. Peace and love and all that jazz.
And wow. That is a jumbled mess. haha I guess the formatting here doesn’t understand the “enter” button. So my apologies. Wow. Oh well, do with it what you can. hahaha
I think a lot of people are missing the point of certain hesitations… Jack created an exclusive content-based subscription service called The Vault and it’s been amazing so far. It really has been great. We pay our dues and we enjoy the ride, everything is here and all the money goes to Third Man. It’s easy and fun.
But now his material is involved in another exclusive content-based subscription service called Tidal. You have to understand we here at the Vault are gonna do a sort of double-take. Like, what now? I thought that stuff was for us, ya’ know? Then it comes down to a simple matter of opinion, I suppose. I believe no other exclusive content-based subscription service should have access to things we don’t have here in the Vault. But others disagree, Jack certainly disagrees. And that’s that. It’s a simple matter of differing opinion.
And I understand we should do things his way because it’s his material. It is, he made it all. And his material is AMAZING, without a doubt. So what am I trying to say? At this point the best way I can put it is like this…
When I saw the post about another exclusive content-based subscription service offering a video of the Stripes I’d never seen before, I felt like I caught my girl kissing a stranger. But that’s not Jack’s problem, it’s not Third Man’s problem. That’s mine. And if there will now be TWO exclusive content-based subscription services containing stuff the other doesn’t have, well then…
That’s that. Third Man and Jack are well within their rights to do that, of course they are. But have a bit of sympathy for those who may have a hard time coming around to the concept of having to have two subscriptions now. That’s all.
Site wide discount!!!! As if I need more temptation to feed my TMR need! ;) What a great perk – thanks!
Hmm, I like this Tidal idea. I don’t feel “ripped off” or “taken advantage of” at all. No one took 20.00 extra bucks outta my pocket. No one is forcing me to subscribe to Tidal either. The exclusive TMR content, it belongs to TMR and if they want to make that available only on Tidal, I get it. It’s theirs to make available anyway they want. I joined the vault for limited vinyl and that’s what I get :). Being able to chat with TMR artists from time to time is a great bonus and now, a 10% discount site wide for being a Platinum member is awesome. I’ve got nothing to complain about.
Like many commenters here, I’ve been a Vault subscriber for many a year. I do it exclusively for the pre-sales, chances at early entry, & like everyone — for the gorgeously fantastic vinyl packages. For me, anything beyond those 3 things (including exclusive digital content) is just icing on the cake. If Tidal looks to be a new direction for Jack & Third Man, I can’t say I’ll subscribe to it… But I’m okay if they throw them a bone every now & then.
