THIRD MAN RECORDS 1ST RAP ARTIST: SHIRT

QUEENS RAPPER SHIRT PREMIERES NEW MUSIC VIDEO, FLIGHT HOME

PURE BEAUTY ALBUM DIGITAL RELEASE FEBRUARY 9
LIMITED EDITION PHYSICAL RELEASE FEBRUARY 23

DEBUT ALBUM RELEASE BY 1st RAP ARTIST
SIGNED TO THIRD MAN RECORDS

“Firstly, he's a beast of rapper who defines bully bars.
If rap were truly a meritocracy,
SHIRT would be in the running for King of New York.” - PITCHFORK

“The mysterious spitter raps his ass off...
His Wordplay Is Insane.” – XXL

Directed by SHIRT and Dave Svedosh, "Flight Home" is immersed in all things classically New York. SHIRT brings you along for ride through Manhattan on top of a truck painted with Nike Adidas signage, something he has done quite a few times on his own prior to filming the music video. For 50 or so blocks from 23rd on Broadway through the Lower East Side, the crowds cheered, took photos and enjoyed the free performance and shirts. After savoring a typical decadent meal, SHIRT creeps down to the famed Freedom Tunnel, exposing its raw and extraordinary graffiti artwork honoring the displaced New Yorkers who sought liberty and refuge.

Inspired by the profound artwork of conceptual artist John Baldessari, PURE BEAUTY will be SHIRT’s first full length album to be released via Third Man Records. As the first rap artist signed to yours truly, SHIRT will make his debut album release digitally on February 9th while the LP with an alternative cover featuring Baldessari's artwork will available February 23rd with a companion limited edition containing bonus content and a Baldessari-inspired shirt. More details forthcoming.

ABOUT SHIRT:
New York rapper SHIRT is ready to raise the bar into a new age of hip-hop as the multi-talented artist embodies the roles of composer, painter, rap music sculptor and writer. While he began on the outskirts of rap using gimmicks to garner attention including a fake New York Times article and name dropping power players, it was his innovative street albums RAP MONEY, NIKE ADIDAS and MUSEUM that garnered him internet buzz.

Currently, SHIRT is living abroad in Europe where he is completing a Master’s in Fine Artsdegree. Although he is a high school dropout with only a GED and no undergraduate degree, SHIRT was accepted based on his impressive portfolio of music and multi-medium art. Stay close as SHIRT continues.

The music is terrible and the lyrics are even worse. But someone out there will like it so I guess that’s what a record company is supposed to do. :) Happy for all you that like it.

really? um… nope. Although a nice effort to sell with the write-up. Music reminds me of why i moved to the country though. Diversification I suppose. Even Atlantic stepped out of their target audience in hopes of making a buck. Good luck with that.

So I gave this a listen last night. Like getbehindmejack (hi, gbmj, miss you!), I enjoy the challenges you all throw out at us. But this is s tough one. There’s a sibilance to SHIRT’s enunciation that seems to be a conscious effect. It sounds cool, but ends up masking half the words in a given line, making them pretty much unintelligible. For someone like me who can’t connect to the music of hip-hop because of the lack of melody, the words have to mean something to me, they’re the only thing I can connect with. If I can’t make them out, then it ain’t gonna happen (Maybe we should call this “Charley Patton Syndrome”? Though I do love the heck out of Patton.). The only part of this song that snaked its way through my ears to my brain was the bit about “can’t hate a racist”, that was though-provoking. The rest was a muddle. If Jack’s intent is for this artist to convert unbelievers to the gospel of hip-hop, I kinda wonder if this song was the right choice of introduction. That said, it’d be interesting to hear another song or two from this album for comparison’s sake.

Third Man, it’s a challenge for me to listen to this guy (or any rapper) after a minute and not get bored..tiresome, agitating, spirit deflating. Just saying.

getbehindmejack

TMR, you continue to challenge me. I guess that’s a good thing, keeps me from getting bored.

getbehindmejack

Am I the only one who is having a hard time with the use of a certain racial slur right off the bat? And then the sexual objectification of his “girl” in the chorus?

Aquamarine2

Aha, that’s the Baldessari connection. Very interesting addition to the TMR roster.
