Merry Christmas jack and TMR crew! May you enjoy all the joys this season has to bring.
So, I was FINALLY able to watch the youtube video of this presentation (one of the top comments for this video is “It starts at 0:47:30.” Very helpful indeed). Really good stuff. I could listen to them talk about Paramount’s story and all the songs a lot more. Hopefully, I will be able to see the Charlie Rose bit on TV. A lot of the songs they mentioned are ones I have listened to and really enjoy as well. For anyone who hasn’t picked up this box yet, truly, you are missing out.
@thirdmanrecords Please let me run a TMR store in Canada!!!
@Cathryn, I suggest you cut up all but one of your credit cards and try to pay cash for most of your purchases. Having just one credit card and trying to pay cash for what you buy can get you into some really wise spending habits and you won’t have to pay a bunch of interest on the things you buy with credit cards if you pay your credit card bill off every month. / That is very interesting that your mother took you to The Russian Tea Room before going to the ballet. I remember going to see the symphony and the ballet when I was a kid too. When I first started seeing news reports on Lady Gaga I thought she was going for “shock and awe” but then I learned that she grew up in New York City across the street from one of the playhouses. She must have witnessed a lot of strange characters through plays and that influenced her ever changing bizarre styles she comes up with for her shows. So now that I understand her upbringing I can accept all the bizarreness./ About photos…you may be right about Swank and the camera. I have always enjoyed taking pictures but I don’t like getting my picture taken. Candid photos are the best. Can I ask what you are doing in your photo here, looking sideways? I figure the photographer told you if you look sideways you will look more sexy in your photo but I feel like I have to look sideways at the picture and that feels awkward. Get a friend to take a picture of you outside at one of your favorite places in NYC. I think that would be more interesting for us here in the Vault. / I’ve been around a long time = I am old and practical and only mean well with any recommendations. / Wish ya luck in getting some work in Nashville, maybe even on the Nashville tv show. I like watching that show to see where they film and sometimes I see some of the musicians I have seen playing around the Music City. Some of the story lines can get nauseating since they are copying real life in Nashville. The music business/industry can get pretty ugly and that is what is so nauseating. If Third Man Records hadn’t come along I would’ve given up on Nashville by now and wouldn’t have much desire to hang out there any more. I do love going to shows in the Blue Room. I hope TMR has something going on in the Blue Room for Record Store Day 2014 so you can finally get to experience an amazing little space (“max occupancy 190” when it is a standing room only/ no seating). / “Happy Turkey Day” to you, all of the other Vaulters and all the wonderful TMR peeps. : )
@Cinci – another Vault Member Tamtaro has alreay threatened to send my credit cards to a “watery grave” or to freeze the in ice cubes. LOL! It won’t work – I can still see the numbers. :D Neil Young is great – sorry you missed him – so did I. I hope eventually to make it down to Third Man Records when there is an actual show. There was no show going on every time I’ve been there. Maybe Record Store Day – but it’s too far away to tell. Yes, I saw the pic of Jack at the Russian Tea Room. I know The Russian Tea room well, my mother took me there many times before seeing the ballet. Maybe I will get Jack tickets to American Ballet – he can bring Lalo and Swanky too. I love to get a pic of Swank looking so thrilled at the ballet. But how do we know he was actually “unhappy”? Maybe that is just Swanky’s way of “making love to the camera”. LOL!!!! :D :D :D
The talk was great! and even got to meet Jack White and shake his hand! Welp im good to go haha
@Cathryn…see ya talking to me here. Get strict with yourself girl and save, save, save your money so you can get this box set and get your butt on down to Nashville for Record Store Day in 2014. Once I had kids I started to find all kinds of creative ways to save money. I was concerned about them from conception until completing college graduations. That is a lot of f N worrying (but you really never stop worrying about them). It is amazing how much money you can save with little money saving tricks. On the music front, I got pretty tired out on what was happening in Nashville until Third Man Records came along, thank God. I don’t go by the store as much as I try to make it to the “live” shows (that has always been my big thing with music). I just can’t believe that I skipped record store day last year because I didn’t feel like being around a lot of people at the time, and dang it, Neil Young showed up and I missed seeing him at TMR. I’ve been following NY since I was 15, now 59 = 44 years this month that I can say I’ve been a true Neil Young fan. Anyway, I’m heavy into the home improvements right now (painting every room in the house and finding other little things to work on along the way) and don’t have time for the chat room…do drop by occasionally for a quick escape. Hey how do you like that new TMR photo of the TMR gang at the Russian tea room in NYC? I was glad to see Swank got to go on the trip but he doesn’t look too happy in the photo. He probably misses being with his girls.
Thank you, Jack, for your insights the other night (the most insightful of the group, H have to say) and for yet again making me think about music in ways that wouldn’t otherwise occur to me. I also got a kick out of the fact that so many of the songs played are on my list of notable tunes from the collection. Being there to experience this presentation, with friends I’ve made in the fan community, makes my Cabinet of Wonders just that much more special to me.
Wasn’t able to get a ticket to the presentation, but have burned all 800 songs to CDs (30) so that I can listen in the car. Its an older car with no USB input. :( . Was really bummed to see people trying to sell their 78 from the show for outrageous money. Guess they really aren’t into this for the music.
@Roja – I know it’s expensive but after seeing it and hearing it I must have it. It was so interesting to hear Jack and the others talk about the recordings. I am so glad they live steamed it so everyone could see it. I was thrilled to have gotten a ticket and to see it live. – oh, and yes, I’m glad Jack used a mic too. You could just see in his face how much he was enjoying the music and we were too.
