Jack White answering TMR Vault Members and fans questions and comments about the new TIDAL offer for vault members:
hey y’all,
first off let me say that everyone at third man is excited to be part of offering tidal hifi to our vault members that we treasure so dearly. tmr has always had the goal of preserving the sanctity of music and helping artists who have no voice get thier music heard. below i’ll try to answer some of the more common questions we’ve been hearing. dont worry, none of this is done in negative reaction, i get where you’re coming from and why you are feeling certain ways, but here’s an artists take on the comments and questions, i hope it helps understand where all the musicians are coming from. it’s a tough time for music, i encourage people to be on the side of supporting musicians, giving to them, not taking from them. god bless

Q: With the amount we pay for the vault, tidal should be free, not just discounted
jack white: third man does not own or make decisions for tidal, this deal is incredibly cool and took us a long time to work on the logistics of. third man is artist owned, and tidal is artist owned. it wasn’t something we had to do at all, but we wanted
the vault members to all know they come first and they have a portal to this artist run streaming service through us now.
Q: What a joke. I refuse to support The vault and tidal. if you claim music is so special and sacred then why charge a premium for people to enjoy it?
jack white: how much did you pay for that last movie you saw at the theater? and how much did that movie cost to make? dont devalue musicians man, support them. making records is expensive, believe us, i dont see people saying we should go to the movies for free, or netflix should be free. that state of music is in flux, be on the side of supporting creativity, not taking from it. this gives you that chance.
Q: I can purchase a new record every month with that $20.
jack white: please do! when i was a teeenager i would go to the record store twice a month and buy 4 records each trip, anywhere from between 12 and 18 bucks a piece! and guess what? i still do! and with tidal, for 9.99 you have every record they can possibly get there hands on to stream. in the car, in the gym. places you can’t play vinyl right? think about it: how much did you spend on movies this year?
Q: sorry Jack, but I have 0 interest in making jayz more money.
and
Q: I'm sorry, but I don't understand how Jack could be involved in this awful business model. Totally screws the fans, I thought he was a bit above that. How much money does he need?
jack white: a streaming service owned by artists is the first step, it’s not about the rich getting richer. it takes artists that can get peoples attention to be able to make a scenario possible for those artists that dont have a voice to get in a position where they aren’t struggling, and beleive me third man records is full of artists the mainstream’s never heard of and have no voice or power in the system. have you heard of rachelle garnier? what about the smoke fairies? drakar sauna? pujol? the gories? those are just some of the up and coming artists on third man that try to make a living in music. and if you stream thier songs….they get paid for it. and they get to LIVE and not take second jobs….and make MORE music! i support keeping musicians you love in business. we want a full third man roster page on tidal that you can stream hundreds of records on, and each time that artist gets something. that’s a beautiful thing.
and also…do we tell steven spielberg we dont need to pay him anymore to watch his movies? he’s made enough off of us right? he should show his new films for free right? haha
Everybody is really putting tidal it’s a awesome idea
What baffles me about all of this controversy is that nobody is forcing you to pay $5/mo for this service. It’s an option, and a great one at that. $5 per month for hifi streaming with nearly unlimited musical content, plus more of your money is going directly to the artists, how is that not an appealing option?
The crux of the matter lies at the core of refining world communications to disclude the military complex from the conversation…. literally… quite frankly… you can trace parent companies of the standardized music world right back to lockheed and the military complex… spread the word… all the software and glitches in the world associated with getting tidal up and running are worth divesting from spook central and the RAT BAT HazMat Brotherhood… dig!
steven spielberg has not said anything to me since et. I love ya Jack, and I want to believe that streaming can be profitable for more than joe the ceo. the musician gets to be famous and joe gets to be rich.(Tom Petty) I make music and I’m not real sure that I believe it that important to get it heard in the current environment anymore. I guess you could make an argument that I am cynical, but this modern model does not open it up, it closes doors and minds. I commend Jack for keep trying to give it back. Thanks for the Elvis record jack! oh…and if I buy digital music, it is itunes.
I have a spotify premium account since spotify exists, now I’m happy to switch it for Tidal and I’m very grateful for the chance to get the HI FI sound quality. People do not understand how important hi fidelity is. I don’t want to talk abut money but I’m just thinking about how much we could spend for our saturday nights, drinking and eating..for example.. We just need to understand what we are more interested in.
a big " Thank You " from Italy, Mr White!
yup, to the point! thanks for doing this. Now I gotta move to a country where TIDAL is available, or wait for a while or keep on spending money on records.
Should read tp on red. ;) that’s an important job!
Ahhh Jack White I am just a gal struggling to make it in this life like you all money aside we all struggle money or not we all have our own demands set upon us different burdens to bear if we choose to bear them right. Thank you for being on this planet with us all in this moment in time so we can appreciate your artistry and creativity and sharing a few of your thoughts and humor with us. I have not signed up as yet but during this week I will. So we will see how quickly I thank you for dragging me kicking and screaming into this world of modern technology after I sign up. But I will say the amazing cam has answered every question I have asked. You’ve got an amazing hard working friendly crew there at third man! You are all very much appreciate from the top to the bottom, from the bottom to the top the whole TMR staff, artists, and even the cleaning people, and whoever kept the to full all day and night during rsd! Because beyond money (I support as much as I can but I’m just I tiny cog in on of a vast set of gears) know what you all do really means something to us how much you are all truly so appreciated makes it all worth while maybe. At least that’s how I am. Much love to you all me!
Jack, thank you for answering questions for some for the naysayers, and those who are so upset you are involved with Tidal. I am really unsure why there is so much hoopla over this anyway. I spend more than $5 a day on lunch, and the only way I can go to a movie for $5 is to see the “early bird” showing during the week. Hell, a drink at the movies is just as much! In my mind, if you don’t agree with it, don’t have the extra money to spend, or just have zero interest, so be it. No need to besmirch Jack White. Golly, you probably do want to bang your head against the wall when you hear some of this junk.
