BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + GIVEAWAY!

Be Your Own Pet

MOMMY

scum stats: so many variants I cannot even keep track

True story time: Be Your Own Pet opened for my band the Dirtbombs back in May of 2005. I believe they only had an (essentially) self-released CD single out at that time. The hype was building, if they hadn't already signed a proper record deal they were just on the verge of doing so.

There was an excitement building, arguably as many people in the room to check them out as to see us, but you know, it was charming that they were all 15 or 16 years old.

I swear on everything that I hold holy, my thoughts at that time were "I think their third album is going to be amazing."

We'd play more shows with them, become friends, I moved to Nashville, put out a record by one of their side projects...our lives became more and more entwined.

I'd have half a thought thinking that the second Turbo Fruits album, coupled with the Jemina Pearl solo album and the second Jeff The Brotherhood album, in an odd way, kinda accomplished the expectations of that missing third album.

So imagine my absolute PRIDE first raised punching the air enthusiasm when "MOMMY" landed at Third Man and...it's absolutely amazing. Just like my prediction from 18 years earlier.

I'm giving away an autographed copy of "MOMMY" on LP and CD in addition to a BYOP tote bag all to the best comment here. The writing prompt is...tell me the best prediction you ever made. Extra points the longer it took to come to fruition. Can be real life or if your imagination is super good...totally make it up. Deadline to post is midnight central time Thursday August 31st.

I was a big Michelle Shocked fan and

Arkansas Traveler just came out. I was just so amazed with everything she has done( Texas Campfire Tapes, Short, Sharp Shockd, Capt Swing) but Arkansas Traveler released and now she’s over the top. I used to throw
Quite a bit of parties back then and every time people were like who is that?.just loving it. But a good friend of mine ( Bob) from Texas became a giant fan after hearing this. So tickets were going on sale at the chestnut cabaret in Philly( no longer exists) and I got 4 of us great seats for the show. Meanwhile, Bob was in a terrible car accident and became a quadriplegic. He returned to Philadelphia to get better hospitalization, and the only thing on his mind was to get better to make it to the show. This was his first time out in a wheelchair after his horrible accident and he couldn’t wait to see the show. Before the show I hung out buy the stage door hopefully to get a chance to get an autograph or maybe just give a shoutout at Bob after this horrible accident and life changing injuries. I got my chance to chat before the show with her and told her the story. During the show instead of making it a nice event she said do you believe this guy stopped me before the show and asked for an autograph and to say something to his poor friend that a paralyzed. What fu—Ing nerve he had. In fact where’s he at , poor Bob is paralyzed, boo Fu—ing hoo. He was never so humiliated, and all I tried, and it was make the evening special. I was so upset, and I wish the worst on the shell shocked.. they actually had an article about the incident in Rolling Stone magazine, and I would hope that her career would fail and it did. This is a absolute true story not to get a free item. But the only time I had a prediction in the music world, and it came true

Fell in love with music 50 years ago, fell off the vinyl wagon with the advent of CD’s. TMR has rekindled my passion for vinyl once again.

Prediction: She Was Actually Gay

I got married when I was around 26, after dating for less than a year. I had this philosophy at the time that my partner and I were compatible enough to do the work a happy couple needs in order to stay married and enjoy a family together, and was interested in the Life Experience of partnering up for keeps.

The first ten years were mundane, not necessarily a wellspring of unending happiness, but we had two sons and as anyone who has had kids will attest they are the defining shift in the paradigms of my life. Around year thirteen, though. Lucky number 13…

The arguments had gotten worse and worse, and I’ll take my share of the blame. One point of contention that kept popping up from her side, however, was the recurring accusation that I had been unfaithful to her with a man. Believe what you will, but this hadn’t ever happened with anyone. What’s more, I hadn’t ever had any any interest in exploring man on man action at any point despite my socially liberal bohemian tendencies. But.

I had reasons to suspect she may have some leanings toward women, as through the years our relationship suffered for multiple reasons. I had always felt the sense she was projecting onto me what she herself had felt; the desire to be free not just of our commitment to each other, but also of the societal expectation to be partnered with the opposite sex.

Here we are about 17 years after we made vows in front of our friends to be married through it all, two beautiful teenaged sons, and happily divorced…

And her girlfriend has moved into the house she and I built together. I’m glad for her, and hope it’s a lasting relationship full of happiness. At the same time, for years and years, I kinda sorta predicted – - – my wife was gay.

I predicted in 1997 that Amazon would be a huge financial success. Not having any money to invest at the time, I have managed to avoid the moral quandary that investing in a company that so abused it’s employees would have caused as I became massively wealthy.

I predict that TMR will save vinyl records for the next 15 years, like they did 13 years ago, long live TMR…

Not sure I’d say it my “best” in that it was quite “negative,” but at New Orleans Jazz Fest in 2017 I had to choice at the end of the day between seeing Tom Petty perform on the Acura stage vs. Lorde on the Gentilly Stage to close out the day’s shows. I’d seen Tom Petty before, but it had been a while and decided to see him that night because I had a feeling (predicted) that he wouldn’t live much longer given his history of drug use and age. Sadly, he died later that year due to a drug overdose. Hated being right about that one, but there you have it.

I don’t need no stinking crystal ball
Don’t need no tarot cards
To know nobody knows
What the future holds
That being said I predict the whole earth will become disarmed
Aggressive actions and thoughts will be gone
Nobody will know how or why
And we’ll be good with that
Not knowing will be just fine.

I remember when Netflix first rolled out “House of Cards” in 2013. At the time, I was vocal about avoiding Netflix streaming, because I said it’s just going to lead to us having to pay for each individual cable channel.

10 years later, most of what’s worth watching is on an individual streaming platform, and it sucks.

A high school teacher asked us to write a letter to ourselves 15 years in the future that included; our thoughts on who we want to be, what skills we want to develop to be happy, and what job we want to land.
Then there was a random raffle game to guess how many skittles were in a vase our teacher made. The winner would get $50 + interest over the 15 years

The letter arrived to my parents house with an unfamiliar return address, so I asked my parents to open and check it out. The 1st thing they noticed was cash money including coins. The second was my distinctly terrible handwriting outlining an embarrassing plan to basically become Fox Mulder. Some things were sweet, but it took 3 attempt to get through reading. (It’s still shocking how terrible my thoughts and brain were back then)

I imagine that there are many lessons that could have been learned from this letter, but it turns out that I guessed the # of skittles exactly. I have always been drawn to games/exercises that involve estimating and guessing amounts, and even though it didn’t come up in the letter, I now work in a job that deals with statistics and forecasting.

I can’t remember writing the letter and it reads like it was writing by a stranger, but the biggest thrill was guessing the number exactly! Took 15 years, but it felt real cool.
Thanks and stay awesome

Even though I technically wasn’t born until ‘96, I have distinct memories of ’84. I was tired, burnt out, and worried what the future would hold. Sitting outside of the Louisiana World Exposition, there was an energetic buzz from those who were excited to peek inside.
Everyone was anticipating the wonders the future would hold! Not me, I was there trying to inform people that Big Brother was running a little behind of Orwell’s schedule, but he WAS coming. Man, now that I’m actually alive and living in the modern era, I understand what I was talking about back in ’84. Big Brother is here in spades, he just has a different eye shadow than Orwell originally thought. Kind of a bummer to be right sometimes.
