Be Your Own Pet

MOMMY

scum stats: so many variants I cannot even keep track

True story time: Be Your Own Pet opened for my band the Dirtbombs back in May of 2005. I believe they only had an (essentially) self-released CD single out at that time. The hype was building, if they hadn't already signed a proper record deal they were just on the verge of doing so.

There was an excitement building, arguably as many people in the room to check them out as to see us, but you know, it was charming that they were all 15 or 16 years old.

I swear on everything that I hold holy, my thoughts at that time were "I think their third album is going to be amazing."

We'd play more shows with them, become friends, I moved to Nashville, put out a record by one of their side projects...our lives became more and more entwined.

I'd have half a thought thinking that the second Turbo Fruits album, coupled with the Jemina Pearl solo album and the second Jeff The Brotherhood album, in an odd way, kinda accomplished the expectations of that missing third album.

So imagine my absolute PRIDE first raised punching the air enthusiasm when "MOMMY" landed at Third Man and...it's absolutely amazing. Just like my prediction from 18 years earlier.

I'm giving away an autographed copy of "MOMMY" on LP and CD in addition to a BYOP tote bag all to the best comment here. The writing prompt is...tell me the best prediction you ever made. Extra points the longer it took to come to fruition. Can be real life or if your imagination is super good...totally make it up. Deadline to post is midnight central time Thursday August 31st.

I guess it would be a series of predicting presale codes based knowing the artist and album and getting some hard to get tickets. That and a 9 leg parlay going from $10 to $2800.

I predict Third Man Records will sign my band SEISMA!

I predicted the Tori Amos “Scarlet’s Walk” on Scarlet red vinyl.

I also predicted The Judybats “Native Son” on green vinyl.

I have no idea why it took them SO LONG.

I predict AI will decimate mankind in <10 years. Our only salvation will be to prove humankind’s immense cultural offerings are worth fighting for. This will culminate in a Farm Aid / Bill and Ted-style mega concert that will be headlined by a world saving super group and MC’d by opinionated celebrities (aka Thought Prophets).

Super Group – CrunkGPT:
Keys – Jeff Goldblum
Guitar 1 – John Stamos
Guitar 2 – Kyle Gass
Guitar 3 – Gina Gleason
Bass – Jared Smith
Bass 2 – Esperanza Emily Spalding
Sax – Kamasi Washington
Sax 2 – Sean Kuti
Trumpet chair 1 – Zack Galafanakis
Drums – Neil Peart hologram (to appease AI overlords)
Drums 2 – Linda Philomena Tsoungui
Vocals – Julianna Barwick, Joe Talbot, Britney Denise Parks
Production – Flying Lotus vs Panda Bear vs Yaeji

So back in the early 80s, I got ticke tickets to a show on a riverboat by some guy that people were saying was a “interesting guu who had a song about a famous deer”. I had no idea what that meant so I went to check the show out. Lo and behold, this gent comes out in his briefs and a trench playing some rock, funk and R&B. He’s a pretty great guitarist and he plays the deer song (not about a deer though) and songs about having a dirty mind. I said to myself then, among that small audience, that this guy was gonna be big one day as he was pretty confident, talented and unique.
Fast forward a few years and he suddenly is all over the radio singing about controversies and later on, partying in the future. He continues to get bigger and

That I won an autographed copy of Be Your Own Pet’s MOMMY. (Also that a fudge sundae will appear at my desk.)

When I was in high school I was having a really tough time with anxiety and tics (I have Tourette’s syndrome). I missing a lot of school and really struggling. One weekend my dad was given some tickets to a NASCAR race by someone at his work. I don’t particular care for NASCAR (and neither does my dad), but they were expensive tickets so we went. While we were there a raffle was going on at some tent for a small die cast car signed by Tony Stewart. Again, I don’t particularly know anything about Tony Stewart, but I figured that I would enter because why not. When I got my ticket, I turned to my dad and told him I was going to win and I just had a feeling that I was (probably what compulsive gamblers say).

Anyway, we watched some of the race and my tics started getting really bad and I wanted to go home (which was over an hour away). My therapist had been working with me on not avoiding places that made my tics worse, so my dad encouraged me to stay. After awhile, we did stay, and if you can tell where this is going… when we went back to the tent I had won the car. I don’t care about NASCAR and try not to put too much value in material things, but for some reason, winning that car was so validating. It’s just a small thing but a memory that makes me smile. But, I predicted right based on 0 data!
