BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + GIVEAWAY!

Be Your Own Pet

MOMMY

scum stats: so many variants I cannot even keep track

True story time: Be Your Own Pet opened for my band the Dirtbombs back in May of 2005. I believe they only had an (essentially) self-released CD single out at that time. The hype was building, if they hadn't already signed a proper record deal they were just on the verge of doing so.

There was an excitement building, arguably as many people in the room to check them out as to see us, but you know, it was charming that they were all 15 or 16 years old.

I swear on everything that I hold holy, my thoughts at that time were "I think their third album is going to be amazing."

We'd play more shows with them, become friends, I moved to Nashville, put out a record by one of their side projects...our lives became more and more entwined.

I'd have half a thought thinking that the second Turbo Fruits album, coupled with the Jemina Pearl solo album and the second Jeff The Brotherhood album, in an odd way, kinda accomplished the expectations of that missing third album.

So imagine my absolute PRIDE first raised punching the air enthusiasm when "MOMMY" landed at Third Man and...it's absolutely amazing. Just like my prediction from 18 years earlier.

I'm giving away an autographed copy of "MOMMY" on LP and CD in addition to a BYOP tote bag all to the best comment here. The writing prompt is...tell me the best prediction you ever made. Extra points the longer it took to come to fruition. Can be real life or if your imagination is super good...totally make it up. Deadline to post is midnight central time Thursday August 31st.

Once Upon a Time Billy strings lived in my town. This one didn’t take as long to come to fruition as others. But it’s by far the best and happiest one. Cuz a lot of people they know Billy’s story. But I was here at a red light and I’ve been hearing about this kid. I’ve been seeing him fly up and down the street on his skateboard. And my kids were small so I didn’t have a lot of time to go check out the new music scene. I was busy moming. Well one day I saw him at a red light sitting on the bench busking for change and I rolled down the windows and listened. I had no idea how that moment was going to change how I think about music and how that person was going to change how I think about music. I was never into bluegrass but my friend convinced me that I should go to the microbrew Fest was like January February Frozen cold down on the bay. We were there to see the Billy strings( I think I lost feeling in my toes somewhat permanently in the cold weather that night but it was totally worth it. Two pairs of pants long underwear snow pants and boots and three pair of socks.)and he heated up that tent! He was just starting to move around a little more. That purple shirt and tie that he had on his clean cut look his happy demeanor friendly attitude. Watching his fingers fly on the Frets changed me I don’t even play an instrument. For a while I would go and try and catch him wherever I could Workshop Brewing little bos, shorts, the cabbage shed. I used to specifically clean next door just so I could open all the windows and hear his music come in(I cleaned offices next to lil bos on thursdays). I bought my friends and family CDs from the shows. I could see then he was going to be something amazing. And if he didn’t make it in this world this good kind amazingly talented human being something was wrong. We used to chit chat a little bit and I remember telling him one day I hope that someday he would collaborate with Jack White. He laughed said he doubted it but he’s a long way from there. And we talked about how much he loved Jack which led to Elvis which led to Les Claypool. And I have said over the years what an amazing fun collaboration that would be. I’ve seen some photos that lead me to believe something. So maybe it hasn’t come to fruition yet the Billy les Jack collab. But you could just feel it in the air around Billy. It’s so fun to go see him at a big show every once in awhile now. And I hear him belt out little Maggie in an arena or over the hillside or through the fields of people. And it’s even more than I imagined he was holding back. I can’t wait to see what comes next and I can’t wait for my next Billy show on Halloween.
So Les Jack and Billy….hmmmm

I graduated Cal with an English degree in 1991 and vowed I would visit Kerouac’s grave. I was going to do temp jobs for a bit and travel for a bit saving for a cross-country trip to Kerouac’s grave in Lowell. Well, I temped, traveled, temped and temped, and then got stuck in the rat race with a full-time job. In ’98 I had a training class in Chelmsford and took a ride after class only to find the cemetery closing a sunset. But in 2004 I had another training class in Marlborough and took a 2 1/2 hour lunch break. Visited his grave, did a grave rubbing that hangs on my office wall, and left a bible stolen from my hotel and a bottle of gin. So…13 1/2 years roughly.

I once predicted that it wouldn’t rain because I had an umbrella, I was correct despite the weather forecast.

My best prediction eh? Well this is one that started when I was wee lad back in the 90s. I grew up on the outskirts of Detroit, I guess some people would call it suburb. During that time in my youth, I used to frequent the downtown area. It was great! There was lots of parking, the few places there had true authentic people. Back then rent was cheap for most places. It was as that point I was like, “Wow man, one day people are going to realize how what gem this city is” Fast forward thirty years. Now a days you can’t find a parking spot. Every free lot and side street you gotta pay for parking. And there are all these unique shops and restaurants popping up every other week. So in the end they took the fun playground of downtown Detroit and turned it in the suburb I was getting away from. Don’t get me wrong, it is still fun to go downtown, but just different; Not as gritty. Well there you have it, I predicted the phoenix resurrection of Detroit. Thanks for letting me participate in this contest.

Having attended Riot Fest in Chicago (2014) and seeing — not by choice — Macaulay Caulkin’s band, Pizza Underground, I predicted that, in a bizarre twist, Jack White, as eclectic as he is, would compose an album entirely using kitchen appliances.

Many thought it was a quirky joke at the time, but I just received advance notice of Vault 58 (I’m special like that), and it features …

Jack White’s "Kitchen Rock,” featuring hits like “Microwave Melodies” and “Blender Beats,” in 180 gram stainless steel!!

Never question the true potential of kitchen utensils! 🎸🍳🎶

I predict that I’ll be extremely happy if I win this contest!

When I heard in 1997 that Peter Jackson would direct an adaptation of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings saga, I predicted it would be utterly amazing based on what he’d accomplished with his first four films despite them being relatively unknown. His work in Heavenly Creatures in particular showed a skill with bringing a fantastical setting to live with minimal budget.

Ever sense I was a baby I predicted I was going to have a baby one day and boom 40 years later I was a mommy!!

Occasionally two wires in my brain touch just right. A brilliant spark that I’m often unable to act upon. When we’d first been able to rip DVD movies to hard drives (a million years ago) I thought “What if we had a massive server with these movies and people could dial in and watch them over the Internet. I’d call it MOD (Movies On Demand)!” Well I was unable to launch MOD but Netflix sure did. Oh well, next time.
