Jack White
Frozen Charlotte
scum stats: I should know this, truly, but there's a lot going on today
Some twenty-eight years into the rhythm of my personal involvement in releasing records with Jack White and it still gets exciting. Album drops are great culminations of months (years!) of work and planning and plotting and scheming and it's not faded a lick since this 15-year-old scamp pawed through his first box of "Let's Shake Hands" and said to no one in particular "people will collect this one day."
So in the spirit of premonitions and prophecies....post in the comments the best thing you ever predicted. Be truthful. Get your comment in by midnight July 16th and the winner (winners?) chosen by me will get a badass copy of "Frozen Charlotte" maybe some extras tossed in, fun times cool stuff thanks for your participation.
I knew he was his father
I predict someone else will win!
Never mind!
In college two of my roommates were studying for the LSAT. One of them was just non stop and he did very well in school as it was. He applied to both Harvard and Yale among many other law schools. One night we were hanging out (probably drinking) and as we were talking about his application, I said, “you’re getting in to both!” The other roommate was was like, “hold on, that’s a lot to say…”, which is understandable. I had to rebutt him though and stand firm that observing as hard as our roommate worked and his apparent talent, I truly believed he would get into the No. 1 and No. 2 law schools at the time. Well, sure enough he got into both, he chose Yale and is doing very well. Probably my best call. What’s another call I have? J Mascis will be like a Vincent Van Gough, his work will not be truly appreciated until after he’s gone. (Y’all are gonna regret not appreciating him while he was here). No I won’t be surprised if many here do…
I predicted that Young Einstein starring Yahoo Serious would be a box office flop in America.
Predicted that Jack would open with Rockin’ in the Free World at Massey Hall in Toronto last year. In fairness I said it half jokingly, but given the venue’s history, and my love of Neil and Jack – I was hoping it to become a reality. I was over the moon when it did and was the perfect start to a great night.
When I was 18 I moved from Portland, Oregon to Columbus, Ohio to attend The Ohio State University. I predicted I’d meet the love of my life at Ohio State. I graduated and moved home without ever even having a serious girlfriend in my time in college, but reconnected with an old friend afterward.
We started dating and I told her I’d quit my job so we could go wherever she wanted to school. She said she never met anybody who loved their school the way I did and she wanted the same thing, so we ended up moving to Columbus so she could go to Ohio State as well. Now we’ve been married 17 years, have two amazing children (including my five-year-old who will be seeing JWIII in Cincinnati this September… His favorite song is “The Hardest Button to Button.”), so in an unexpected way it ended up being kind of right. I didn’t meet her at OSU but ours is a love forged in Central Ohio for certain.
I’m real close to my niece. Basically the daughter I’ll never have. She’s great. She’s 18 now. When she was 5 I predicted to get the age she would pass me in height. She tracked it and always wanted to know how we matched up. 14th birthday came along and sure enough, passed me by the smallest of margins but still it was there. Seeing that kid off to college soon. She’s the best. I’m lucky.
Trying to keep it short: favorite band from my youth The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Saw them for the first time in Chicago in 2012 and I was over the moon. In a time before setlists being shared online (or at least where I could see them), was thinking to myself “holy cow, the only thing that could make this night even more incredible is if they played Pirate Ship or something” (Pirate Ship was only ever available on original vinyl release in ‘94 and rarely spoken of again). About halfway through the show, they started into Pirate Ship with no announcement as if it was just another song on the set list. Eyes almost fell out of my head. Most of the crowd had been singing along to every song at this point, but I remember looking around during a verse and saw most folks had stopped and only a couple people were singing along with me. The whole night was beyond surreal, so much so that I’ve had to go back and check the setlist from the show just to make sure it actually happened as I told it. Never heard them play it again after that night.
I don’t think I can beat predicting a 5 figure sale of a hand painted 7" but I’ll give it a try… I predicted that my son would win the signed test pressing at the TMR Cass Corridor Frozen Charlotte listening party and I was wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever actually predicted anything. bummer.
Thanks Ben, and cheers to Jack, the band, & entire staff at TMR during ‘Frozen Charlotte’ release week, on your efforts being realized!
Flipping through the cobwebbed rolodex in my head, nothing noteworthy jumps out at me concerning a great prediction or premonition I’ve had.
I do predict, however, a perfect day in a couple weeks, seeing Jack White & friends at Pine Knob!
Having missed the ‘No Name’ tour, this will be my first show in quite some time, and since receiving a near 12-hour simultaneous pancreas kidney transplant (Go Blue!) almost two years ago.
Take care everyone!
