The Best Of Dope Folks Records Vol. 1
scum stats: limited to 500 copies, 100 of those on colored vinyl, 400 on black
I'm unaware of anyone else doing the deep, archival digs of underground 90's hip hop and actually reissuing them. A slippery slope for sure, as these songs are chock full of uncleared samples and they were never hits to begin with. But bless bless bless Dope Folks, been doing this for AGES now and the passion and the intense love of the game shines through here. I doubt there's legit money to be made here, so you know they mean it.
In an alternate universe, I just track down obscure and unknown Detroit hip hop from the 80s and 90s and listen to it all day long. I realize that I could make this a part of my job, but damn, I got enough on my plate already, lemme just zone out and chill to this stuff.
Got a spare copy of the LP here for someone's listening enjoyment. Just post a comment by midnight central time on Thursday April 17th and we'll pick it at random. But we won't be mad if you say something funny. Or poignant. Or though-provoking. Just do it.
I’m still trying to think of something funny to say…
Nice record though. Good luck to all.
Damn I wanna done out and chill too , this is cool
I remember the time I got sent two vault packages by mistake. Mailed one back and got 33% off the store. Just saying.
That’s dope
Love free records
Getting a vinyl that you’ve never listened to and have no idea what it is can be compared to buying yourself a present, and playing it is like unwrapping said present.
Sweet. Brings back memories of being a kid and listening to 96.3 Jamz and WJLB.
Incredibly excited to get Vault 63. Get Behind Me Satan is easily my favorite White Stripes album. It sounds different from everything before it. Take, Take, Take is a fantastic song and might be my favorite of the album. The stereo effect with how two takes are played at the same time at certain points is cool.
This is a genre and era I can get excited about
Damn!
Listening to that was like taking a Time Machine back to my youth. The 90’s were a great time for Rap / Hip Hop and this totally reminded me of listening to some of those cassettes / cd’s of the time. Young MC, ICE T, Tone Loc, Beastie Boys, Cypress Hill, Maestro Fresh Wes, House Of Pain, Salt N Pepa, Run DMC, and on and on. I honestly prefer this period of RAP & Hip Hop vs today’s….it seemed more lyrical, sample, and beat driven with plenty scratching, (which I love), vs today’s which seems more intent on being shocking and vulgar….Damn again!…typing this is making feel and sound like a grumpy old man. Although you may be right about the lack of legit money to made here I’d like to hope you’re wrong because there is some really good stuff here that deserves to be heard. Thanks for that Ben totally got lost in my own thoughts and memories of that time listening to it.
