BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + GIVEAWAY!
Jeff the Brotherhood
Ye Olde...EP
scum stats: limited to 300 copies
I'm pretty sure I bought the first Jeff 7-inch via mail order from Infinity Cat within a year or so of it being released back in 2005. And this most recent EP came from the band-adjacent Earthbound Sound label just this week, giving me a solid 17-ish years of mail order directly from the band. In that span of time the band has released a metric shit ton of records, wholly embracing limited editions and colored vinyl and multiple forays into lathe cuts even. Truly a band after my heart.
So from the post-Melvins simplified sludge of that debut single "Cancer Killer" through now, the band has evolved impressively. The laconic, atmospheric, meandering excursions on "Ye Olde..." are impressive, the contributions of Kunal Prakash on guitar, bass and harmonium are a solid compliment to the further additions of modular synth, harmonium and recorder...that's a lot of shit to throw at the wall for a band that literally started out as drums and guitar.
But JTB wears it well, solidly in their thirties now, the stink of over eager youth having fully escaped them and the middle age maturity proving for fruitful explorations. Quasi new age for a quasi new age. Music to import beads by.  Drone for days. Worth your attention.
I've pulled a copy of Jeff the Brotherhood's "Whatever I Want" test pressing (TMR-110) from my closet. This sumbitch is so rare it's not even listed in the Discogs database. Said disc with my handwriting on the label from September 15, 2011, will be given away to the arbitrarily "best" comment left here. Maybe it has something to do with brothers or maybe the differences in your self between 2005 and 2022. Or whatever. Surprise me. Don't be predictable, don't be basic, make something that we can all enjoy and/or appreciate. Comments need to be posted by 11:59pm Central Time on March 17th to be considered for the prize.

This is one of the best bands out there. Completely under the radar, and just stellar musicians not out to impress, but out to treat the world with something unique. In recent years they’ve made it tougher and tougher on their fans. Testing us to the very limits of following. But Heavy Days is one of the best garage albums you’ve never heard. Truly a masterpiece. But it was the Whatever I Want song that sealed the deal when jack lended his hands on keyboards. Colleen Green followed this up with her own version of whatever I want on 2015’s I want to grow up. Which also heavily features Jake’s talents. This comment is late but I hope it finds someone. I’ll never not follow JEFF!

I’ve been thinking about your Mom

From 2005 and 2022, I’ve gotten older. Not in my head. Still got that wound up okay. But I’ll never quit music. I went to Full Sail to learn the board. Did a lot of live shows. Love working with bands in the studio. Anyway I’m rambling. I’d love to hear some good stuff picked out to be listened to. Anything from thirdman. Thanks for your picks!

Give me the record Ben. I’m tired of giving intelligent answers!!

Sept 2011 we transitioned into next life phase as empty nesters selling the family home into condo life. Yep, I’m old enough to be your mother. My adult kids are probably older than y’all here and music obsessed son-in-law silently jealous of my vinyl record collection. We try to one up each other with the coolest additions of “editions”, not gonna lie I’m winning thnx to Vault TMR. Music is woven into my soul thnx to high school & college during best decade ever of music, the 70’s. Timeless. While Daughter & SIL are scouring the country for coolest underground indy music gigs, grandma here now babysits. JTB is in their top 5 jive & for mom to score a rare cut to the rivalry collection would secure my bitchin’ place. Cuz when cool is cool, this oldie but goodie music fiend can’t be beat. No difference between 2005 -2011 still oldest, coolest, & with new knees still grooves like it’s 2005. Timeless rare sumbitch in the empty nest house right here, still spinning her vinyls ((O))

The biggest difference between me in 2005 and me in 2022 is that I now have epilepsy 😕

And after googling, it turns out Mitch Hedberg left us in 2005. Morbidly Serendipitous
