BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + TRI-COLOR GIVEAWAY

Jack White

“Over and Over and Over”

limited edition one-sided tri-color, 200 something copies pressed, complete with custom picture sleeve that will be slightly different from the standard released version

Do you guys know how pumped I am?

For the record, I first heard this monster riff in 2005 at Jack’s house while he and Meg were recording “Get Behind Me Satan.”

I am pretty sure that the “Blue Orchid” riff pre-dates this one by a few days, but in my mind, they exist hand-in-hand. While “Blue Orchid” smashed that recording process wide open and gave Jack the inspiration to make that album as bad ass as possible, THIS riff, inarguably, is ten times stronger. I feel like Jack was originally calling it “Thermonuclear Counter-Thrust” but maybe I’m just imagining that. I can find no contemporaneous documentation of that name.

There are two takes of demo recordings of this song from 2005 (with the riff played solely on fuzz bass). There are demo recordings from 2007 with the White Stripes trying it in rehearsal leading up to the tracking of the “Icky Thump” album. Imagine the guitar profile more in line with the octave-pedaled presence of the song “Icky Thump” and that’s a good start for understanding the 2007 version. I guess the Raconteurs tried it but I never heard any evidence, same with the Dead Weather. It was apparently the main track that Jack and Jay-Z worked on together in 2009, under the title “Ray Bans” or “Behind My Ray Bans” and although I’ve never heard that working, I’m told to imagine the phrase “Behind my Ray Bans” to coincide with the last five notes of the riff.

As Jack has already said, this had been his white whale. We sincerely considered including the ’07 demo as part of the “Icky Thump X” Vault package last year. I have no recollection of Jack ever previously giving me such an impassioned plea…”I just really think we shouldn’t put this on the Vault” he said. My response was pretty matter-of-factly, “Well, it’s your label, so please don’t feel like you have to convince me.” Maybe he was trying to convince himself?

Regardless, at the end of 2017 when Jack finally had played me this version you hear now, upon the end of the song, I looked at him and said “I’ve been waiting twelve years to hear this song with lyrics.”

The final version of this song is everything I’d ever dreamed it would be. It is my favorite moment on the album, with the coda to “Humoresque” being a close second. I cannot wait to see this monster unleashed unto a sell-out crowd at Little Caesar’s Arena, a stone’s throw away from the Gold Dollar where this whole mess got started.

I’ve got an extra copy of this limited tri-color to give away here. AUTOGRAPHED by Jack White, today, explicitly for this purpose. Don’t use my give-away here as an excuse to miss going to any number of the listening parties we’re throwing at record stores worldwide though. Even though we’re giving away tri-colors at the listening parties, none of those will be autographed. Man we spoil you kids.

As for the giveaway, post a comment, can be about whatever, but maybe talk about a significant wait you’ve endured in life. Can be funny, pithy, in iambic pentameter, whatever. The “best” comment will be solely determined by me. Please chime in by noon central time on Tuesday, March 13th.

When i was a little kid, around 4 or 5, my dad played me The Who records and also showed me videos. I always wanted to play drums like Keith Moon but never told anyone, to this date i still don’t know why i never told anyone. Now i’m 27 and about to start drumming lessons just for the sake of it. Kind of a long wait i guess!

Nothing to do with music, but waited 17 years before getting a cat after my last one passed away …the pain was too unbearable. On a lighter note, ran out of work on Friday drove into London and ran in the pouring rain …and missed the listening party :( asked if they were going to play the album again, but they said it finished a while ago ..the nice man saw how disappointed I was though & gave me a badge :D

Was gutted to miss out on the listening party in Oslo as I was traveling to Manchester, UK, that Friday. I was then extremely happy to see that a record store in Manchester, Piccadilly Records, was also on the list of stores hosting listening parties, but was devastated when I showed up and they told me it was rescheduled to Saturday due to a planned release event for another artist on Friday. Hence, I missed out on two listening parties :-(. Winning this signed single would of course make up for it, while I look forward to seeing Jack live in London in June 26!!

When I was 13, I got tickets to see my favorite band ever, The White Stripes. I was so pumped, because Icky Thump had just come out and it was one of the first CDs I bought new that was mine—not my parents’, not bought with someone else’s money, but mine. And then the show was cancelled. So I waited—six years of following the band’s news as they toured Canada, teased their plans for a new album… and then 2011 rolled around. I came home and my dad broke the news, that the band had broken up. I would never see my favorite band. I was heartbroken. But they stayed my favorite band (I’m 24 now, and they still are). When Jack announced Blunderbuss, I was excited to see him on tour. I’d seen the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather before, and he always put on a great show. So, when he announced a Seattle tour, I got tickets for myself, my parents (who shaped my music tastes), and the girl I was in love with, had been for years. And then she broke my heart. I gave the fourth ticket to a worker at the TMR van outside the venue and went in with my parents. The show began, Jack took the stage with the Peacocks, and immediately started playing “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground”, the opening song to my favorite album of all time. I had just graduated high school, wasn’t sure where my life was going—and here he was, half of my favorite band playing a song I was sure I would never hear live. I teared up, stood beside my parents and stared at the stage, eyes blurry. It was the most beautiful moment I’ve ever experienced at a concert. I waited a half decade for that moment, and I’ll never forget it. Even if I don’t win, I just wanted to thank Jack for letting my dream come true.

Our first home, me and my husband waited 10 years to get our first home. We rented for years and years dealt with horrible neighbors, nosy maintenance people. This past year we finally did it, saved a little nest egg. Now we finally have our home, not fully furnished yet, but we have time. And yes we have a music room, where I blast my record player and have my Jack White concert posters hanging. Also not shocking, I will be painting that room a baby blue to go with those posters. :)

I remember waiting outside in the Irish cold to meet Brendan Benson! And I did! And he was the sweetest guy I’ve ever met and I will tell that story til the day I die! They say never meet ya heroes, unless it’s Brendan Benson!
