BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + TRI-COLOR GIVEAWAY

Jack White

“Over and Over and Over”

limited edition one-sided tri-color, 200 something copies pressed, complete with custom picture sleeve that will be slightly different from the standard released version

Do you guys know how pumped I am?

For the record, I first heard this monster riff in 2005 at Jack’s house while he and Meg were recording “Get Behind Me Satan.”

I am pretty sure that the “Blue Orchid” riff pre-dates this one by a few days, but in my mind, they exist hand-in-hand. While “Blue Orchid” smashed that recording process wide open and gave Jack the inspiration to make that album as bad ass as possible, THIS riff, inarguably, is ten times stronger. I feel like Jack was originally calling it “Thermonuclear Counter-Thrust” but maybe I’m just imagining that. I can find no contemporaneous documentation of that name.

There are two takes of demo recordings of this song from 2005 (with the riff played solely on fuzz bass). There are demo recordings from 2007 with the White Stripes trying it in rehearsal leading up to the tracking of the “Icky Thump” album. Imagine the guitar profile more in line with the octave-pedaled presence of the song “Icky Thump” and that’s a good start for understanding the 2007 version. I guess the Raconteurs tried it but I never heard any evidence, same with the Dead Weather. It was apparently the main track that Jack and Jay-Z worked on together in 2009, under the title “Ray Bans” or “Behind My Ray Bans” and although I’ve never heard that working, I’m told to imagine the phrase “Behind my Ray Bans” to coincide with the last five notes of the riff.

As Jack has already said, this had been his white whale. We sincerely considered including the ’07 demo as part of the “Icky Thump X” Vault package last year. I have no recollection of Jack ever previously giving me such an impassioned plea…”I just really think we shouldn’t put this on the Vault” he said. My response was pretty matter-of-factly, “Well, it’s your label, so please don’t feel like you have to convince me.” Maybe he was trying to convince himself?

Regardless, at the end of 2017 when Jack finally had played me this version you hear now, upon the end of the song, I looked at him and said “I’ve been waiting twelve years to hear this song with lyrics.”

The final version of this song is everything I’d ever dreamed it would be. It is my favorite moment on the album, with the coda to “Humoresque” being a close second. I cannot wait to see this monster unleashed unto a sell-out crowd at Little Caesar’s Arena, a stone’s throw away from the Gold Dollar where this whole mess got started.

I’ve got an extra copy of this limited tri-color to give away here. AUTOGRAPHED by Jack White, today, explicitly for this purpose. Don’t use my give-away here as an excuse to miss going to any number of the listening parties we’re throwing at record stores worldwide though. Even though we’re giving away tri-colors at the listening parties, none of those will be autographed. Man we spoil you kids.

As for the giveaway, post a comment, can be about whatever, but maybe talk about a significant wait you’ve endured in life. Can be funny, pithy, in iambic pentameter, whatever. The “best” comment will be solely determined by me. Please chime in by noon central time on Tuesday, March 13th.

I just got to give credit to jack White he went above and beyond for my state of Alaska. You see back in the day I had tickets to see the white stripes play in anchorage Alaska. Unfortunately the show never happened and the band split I was pretty devastated but that’s life.

Fast forward to jacks solo career and he comes through ten fold. Puts on a surprise show and fulfilled everyone who missed out years ago. I’ve always liked his music and this just added more respect for the man. I have never in my life seen a musician come through like that on his level. He didn’t have too yet he did anyways. Means a lot.

So Jack Best wishes on this new album and your future. You sir are a true artist who respects his fans as much as we respect you. Cheers from Alaska

How is it possible I didn’t see this earlier!! I guess my “waiting” would consist of a photograph of me waiting patiently by my computer hitting refresh just waiting on that response to an email I wrote so many months ago… you would see the look of excitement/determination mixed with a little fear that my message had fallen on deaf ears. Perhaps one day my efforts will be rewarded, perhaps not. Such is the waiting game.

I’ve got one… it’s late but who cares. I waited outside thirdman records for over 10hrs to get the fastest record ever made. During the long grueling day under the sun those of us who waited for HOUrs lost track of the line. Well needless to say me and newly made line buddies had to wait a little bit longer because of the people who cut in line. Not mad at it, that’s the way things go some times. Anyways, got the record headed back home and made it to my sons baseball game. Good times fo sho. Not that significant in the grand scheme of things but I did learn something. I learned I could endure 10hrs of standing in a line for a record and I thought man if I can stand in line for a record for that long I can do just about anything.

I just saw this a day late and a dollar short. Oh well, at least I caught a Bobby and Phil show in Boston recently so March has been pretty uplifting anyways. And I just scored a copy of Alice Cooper Live on the Astroturf in the elusive black vinyl only 100 issued. Keep up the great work Ben !

Oh well, I covered Over and Over and Over if any of you here are interested. You got 4 minutes, Blackwell?

I have WAITED since I saw Jack White in Jackson, TN at the Carl Perkins Center in October of 2012 to see him again. I was so bummed that I wasn’t going to be able to see him in April at the Eagles Ballroom/Rave when presale tickets sold out fast, but classy TMR made it all good and took care of making it right. Third Man Rocks!!!

Lollapalooza 2012 Chicago- Convinced my friend to go to the front of the stage for Jack White. The problem was to ensure this we had to be in the front for At The Drive In as well. Sure, great band but the wait was not at all what we expected. As soon as the first note hit and out of nowhere we are smashed between hot, sweaty guys for the next 45-60 min. We stood our ground despite being tossed around and made it through to Jack without any broken bones. Although I’m sure she still thinks I’m crazy, after seeing Jack she did forgive me for that wait. Totally worth it.
