Olivia Jean
“Night Owl” LP
scum stats: I’m pretty sure we pressed 500 copies on the color variant, but after 600+ releases, my memory is really getting foggy
WOOOOOHOOOOO happy release day!
We’ve been working a while for this one and am super-stoked to drop this album on to the world.
If I can be a little bit of a self-promoter, I’m proud to say I play drums on the title track of this LP.
OJ had a session scheduled and her regular drummer was unavailable, so I dropped in at the last minute.
We spent most of the day on a complex, complicated song that had lots of starts and stops and different parts and just quite different from structures I am used to playing.
(that song did not make the album, whatever it was called)
Then just before calling it a day, Olivia said that she had a little germ of an idea and that she wanted to just get it down to tape.
When she played that tasty little lead riff my eyes LIT up. I KNOW how to play drums to that shit! In my brain, I just locked in to Dave Grohl circa ’93 style and it was damn fun to jam along.
I really, really had no part in deciding that it was the lead single…but I certainly didn’t disagree with it either.
But honestly, the entire album is chock full of bangers. Covers of the Flaming Groovies and the beautifully odd and catchy Bollywood classic “Jaan Pehechan Ho” are stellar, while the originals are brimming with energy and enthusiasm and twangy surf style.
And man…the colored vinyl on this sumbitch is one of the most exquisite pieces of vinyl that Third Man Pressing has ever made.
To help celebrate, I’m giving away a test pressing of the “Night Owl” LP here. In the comments here, share a story about staying up late. No sleep. So tired you’re hallucinating. It can be true, it can be made up, just make it good. Winner is chosen at my discretion. Go!
NO SLEEP FOR THIRD MAN BLUE ROOM… I woke up at 4am on April 9th to go to work in Indianapolis and drive 1 1/2 hours to Madison Indiana to get my boyfriend and head to a show that was announced a few days before. we decided to go to this in a work night and both of us had to work the next day. So after I got to his house we drove to Nashville Tennessee for the Raconteurs concert which was awesome. After the concert we had to stand in line at the store to get a poster and T-shirt’s and a few records. We left the concert and drove to get some dinner and arrived back in Madison at 4am. I decided against getting any sleep and staying awake since I would only get an hour anyway. I had to drive back to Indianapolis to work and it was by far a rough day. Needless to say I have never went with no sleep and drive approx 11 hours to see a concert in a 24 hour period. I’m so glad I went to the concert though. The blue room was awesome and The Raconteurs put on an awesome show. I have since then seen them again in Indianapolis this month with Hex Ex.
Flew to Amsterdam, showered and worked till 9pm. Drank beer watching Holland play in the Euros and flew back to Atlanta Thursday morning. Drove from Atlanta to Asheville and back Friday and flew to Dublin on Saturday night. Dissy with jet lag but caught the Undertones, best band ever, in Northern Ireland that night.
I’d been working on a project with fewer hours of sleep than days it was spread across. I wanted to crash, but ended up at a party instead.
Thus begins my experiments with time travel.
I was enjoying the company of friends at my apartment. Then I closed my eyes. I opened them later that night at a party where I did not know anyone, across town.
I blinked and opened my eyes again on a college campus. I was urinating into the mouth of a bronze sculpture of a tiger.
Next moment I was on the roof of a 7 story building shooting off bottle rockets. I’m not sure where the building was, how I got there, or what happened next.
I awoke the next evening on the floor of my kitchen. My pockets were filled with chicken wings. I didn’t know why. But hey, breakfast.
RSD last year. Got up early grabbed my two teenagers and headed on a 2 1/2 hour drive to get in line at 5 am. Well Worth it.
I’m struggling right now to stay awake for the 3rd night in a row till 3am here in the U.K. for the Raconteurs live stream but I’m sure it’ll be worth it just as the previous nights were.
I once stayed up for 24 hours to watch season 3 of ‘24’ in one sitting. Started episode one at 1:00pm, because that’s when it began, and watched every episode in the season on the hour when it started until it was over.
I will stay awake until this cool vinyl is delivered to my door which means I will probably be awake for the rest of my life!???
Cocaine is a helluva drug. The sex was something else entirely. I’ve still got the rug-burns on both my knees
I once stayed awake for 3 days. The first I was all in a haze. By day 2 I was sure things ran across the floor; a knock on the door? Is this what it’s like to be crazed? Day 3 my thoughts ran deep. Most were hard to keep. But one rang true. I knew what to do. You have to go to sleep.
I couldn’t sleep very well last night.
