Olivia Jean

“Night Owl” LP

scum stats: I’m pretty sure we pressed 500 copies on the color variant, but after 600+ releases, my memory is really getting foggy

WOOOOOHOOOOO happy release day!

We’ve been working a while for this one and am super-stoked to drop this album on to the world.

If I can be a little bit of a self-promoter, I’m proud to say I play drums on the title track of this LP.

OJ had a session scheduled and her regular drummer was unavailable, so I dropped in at the last minute.

We spent most of the day on a complex, complicated song that had lots of starts and stops and different parts and just quite different from structures I am used to playing.

(that song did not make the album, whatever it was called)

Then just before calling it a day, Olivia said that she had a little germ of an idea and that she wanted to just get it down to tape.

When she played that tasty little lead riff my eyes LIT up. I KNOW how to play drums to that shit! In my brain, I just locked in to Dave Grohl circa ’93 style and it was damn fun to jam along.

I really, really had no part in deciding that it was the lead single…but I certainly didn’t disagree with it either.

But honestly, the entire album is chock full of bangers. Covers of the Flaming Groovies and the beautifully odd and catchy Bollywood classic “Jaan Pehechan Ho” are stellar, while the originals are brimming with energy and enthusiasm and twangy surf style.

And man…the colored vinyl on this sumbitch is one of the most exquisite pieces of vinyl that Third Man Pressing has ever made.

To help celebrate, I’m giving away a test pressing of the “Night Owl” LP here. In the comments here, share a story about staying up late. No sleep. So tired you’re hallucinating. It can be true, it can be made up, just make it good. Winner is chosen at my discretion. Go!

drove from kankakee illinois to fargo north dakota around 1986. normally a little over 10 hours. ended up hitting a detour in wisconsin. it was a big detour. wound up driving through miles of farmland. all i could find on the radio was polka music. it was me and my dog cooper in a mazda b200 circa 1983. the drive ended up taking a little over 14 hrs. a couple hours out of fargo i was struggling to stay awake. an hour out of fargo i had my head out the window singing lily rosemary and the jack of hearts, all 15 verses over and over. finally rolled into fargo about 1:30am. spent the night in the back of my truck with cooper in a truck stop parking lot. got up the next morning had truck stop breakfast and drove to bismarck.

Company I work for was moving offices in NYC. Due to not wanting to oversleep before my flight, not sleeping well in hotels, working 20 hours one day, then another 15 the next, I was up for the better part of 4 days straight. Worst part was in the middle of day 3, we thought we were done. I went back to the hotel, took a shower and had just sat down on the bed when the phone rang and I was needed back at the new office for an emergency. Once i finally got back to the hotel, I slept for about 16 hours straight. I woke up in the exact same position and felt like i had been run over by a truck.

I told my parents I was gonna sleep at my friends house, instead we drove to DC to see Silverchair at the 9:30 club, we were gonna sleep at the National Mall on a park bench but park security was on point that night so we stayed up all night and went to the 9:30 club the next night to see Live play, and after the show we hitch hiked home 4 hours away due to our car being towed. Thanks Obama

I am currently in school to become a Physician Assistant. It’s a lot of work and studying and bla bla bla no ones cares I know. Sometimes while studying I will put on netflix for background noise so one particularly long night awhile back I made it through several movies. Early in the morning and hours upon hours into learning about rheumatology (which by the way, is the worst, most boring, mundane area of medicine. Honest to God, I still know nothing about lupus besides that Seal has it.), I put on “Rain Man” and found my new religion. Do you know those moments in life in which you realize you know something that you didn’t think you did? Maybe remember a concept you have no reason to remember? Make a lucky guess that wasn’t really lucky because subconsciously your mind decided to hold onto an entirely obscure and inconsequential fact? In those moments, you’ve gone full Rain Man. You have become the savant form of Dustin Hoffman. That’s how I’m getting through this mess of Physician Assistant school. Instead of toothpicks, baseball cards, and Abbott and Costello routines, I ‘Rain Man’ in answers to questions about the risk factors for developing lupus(?).

High school days, was in school band playing bass for the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat musical. Was also working at local grocery store. Between rehearsal nite, work, scheduled matinees and evening performances also had a girlfriend and was crashing at a friends place for the weekend. Needless to say not much sleep was going on between shows and was seeing all kinds of colours with what my buddy was cooking up. Cheers and thanks

I mean, when you’re binging twin peaks, you can’t stop at the episode where Bob kills Maddie, or you really won’t sleep….so you just keep going.

The last time I had to go with no sleep for multiple days was our last move…its was a super tight turnaround, with 4 deals going in a domino-like fashion, so each deal had to close to make the next one happen, and we all had to get our paperwork signed within hours of each other. Let’s just say it was a mess and we were all literally moving on top of each other. The lovely family who bought our house had to move their stuff into the garage as we were moving stuff out of the house because of the super tight timelines on all of us – oddly enough the TMR connection here is that the wife had previously been Brendan Benson’s nanny, small world, huh? And, on top of everything, our movers didn’t show and we(kiddos included) had to do everything ourselves, so we didn’t sleep at all for most of 3 days. We all survived and we still keep in touch, but none of us are planning on moving again anytime soon.
