Carlos Cortez and His Rhythm Kings
“Mambo Costa Rica” b/w “Rose of Tangier”
scum stats: who knows
So I’ve just noticed a kink in the results that eBay spits out for its searches and it’s pissing me off.For example, I search the term “detroit” under the category “records” probably every other day for the past ten years. I know what titles spit out as if they’re ingrained into my soul. This specific search is, by all means, my shit.
Within the past week or so, searches started being populated with TONS of Motown releases, all previously unseen by me and none of which have the word Detroit anywhere in their title or description.
Additionally, I use the “vintage Detroit t-shirt” search regularly. Again, I’ve come to know what to expect with this query. I rock vintage Detroit shirts regularly.
But in this same week or so, that search is absolutely littered with Detroit sports jerseys of all stripes and vintage, NONE of which are actually t-shirts or even have the term t-shirt in their title or description.
Had acquaintances relay stories of searching for blues records and their searches being filled with blue colored vinyl pressings, or searching for a rare 78 of Lewis Black “Corn Liquor Blues” and instead turning up tons of comedy albums by the comedian of the same name.
I feel like this is bullshit and is only further pushing me towards Discogs and Etsy to get my vinyl and vintage shirt fix.
So in celebration…I share with you a record from a Detroit label I’d MUCH rather show up without explicitly even searching it. A mambo on Fortune is a sight to behold. I’ve definitely got room in my life for more of this.
For the giveaway…write in the comments what you’re go-to eBay searches are AND what you’re seeing differently from them lately, if anything.
Winner will get a blues record or a blue vinyl record or something that is only tangentially connected to what they’re actually looking for. Good luck.
“Silvertone”, “1484”, “vintage 60’s”, “reel to reel”, “Division 57”. No changes except to my bank account which is suing me for assault.
No BS, my top ebay search is Third Man Vault. I didn’t subscribe until vault pkg#15 so I LOOK FOR THE OLDER ONES fill in the desired missing ones without paying through the bloody nose!
I have saved searches for “The White Stripes”, “Jack White”, and “Third Man Records”. Within the last week or so, like you mentioned, I have been seeing additional results labeled “sponsored” that have nothing really to do with the searches. So yeah, strange things are afoot at the Circle K, err eBay….
I’m searching for squeezems plush toy gunther gorilla. It’s a 1987 vintage plush toy Dinosaur Jr used on the cover of Green Mind. It’s hard to find. I get Squee’ems reusable food pouches.
every so often I search for a tartan pin from the 2007 WS tour. I was going to buy it at the Fairfax va show, but didn’t have enough cash at the time. it said nobody knows how to talk to children and makes out of pewter. I’ve never have seen it on eBay!
I search eBay for free shipping on items I’m interested in. Discogs is good if you want to short change Uncle Sam (sales tax responsibly of buyer to report). I served four years in the USAF, can’t I get a perk? Thanks TMR.
My go to search, and holy grail that I hope one day is available on ebay is, “Rob Jones, The White Stripes 2003, I thank you, and my sister thanks you posters.”
For around 16 years my ‘go to’ search on eBay has been ‘White Stripes’ in Music and Entertainment memorabilia/ Music memorabilia resulting in a somwhat eclectic collection of early White Sripes vinyl, memorabilia and total junk. As the years have passed I have added ‘Raconteurs’ – ‘Dead Weather’ – ‘Jack White’ to the search. Health issues stopped me searching late last year and early this year and I’m giving it a rest for a few months so can’t help with anything that may be amiss in the searches there.
I also collect antique photographic images and postcards. My ‘go to’ search for the photographs (on U.K. eBay), is Collectable Antique Images (pre 1940), Collectable cdv’s and Cabinet (pre 1940) A cabinet being a largish photograph, the occasional wooden cabinet gets itself onto the listings but other than that all is working well.
I had saved searches for all kinds of odds and ends my wife needed. For example the missing pieces of our vintage fiesta ware place settings (I know so cool ?). It used to occasionally send me an alert but now it sends alerts all the time and never for anything useful. Gonna find another source. Also i agree with you that searching and buying records on eBay has gone to shit.
Searching for old RSD exclusives (blues/classic rock mainly), I ran into a demo of Sufjan Stevens.
The 45 was cut around the grooves as the Star of David.
That was the first time I saw a record presented like that.
Thought it was pretty neat. . . . . But normally I just look at sneakers.
