BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + GIVEAWAY

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + GIVEAWAY

Carlos Cortez and His Rhythm Kings

“Mambo Costa Rica” b/w “Rose of Tangier”

scum stats: who knows

So I’ve just noticed a kink in the results that eBay spits out for its searches and it’s pissing me off.

For example, I search the term “detroit” under the category “records” probably every other day for the past ten years. I know what titles spit out as if they’re ingrained into my soul. This specific search is, by all means, my shit.

Within the past week or so, searches started being populated with TONS of Motown releases, all previously unseen by me and none of which have the word Detroit anywhere in their title or description.

Additionally, I use the “vintage Detroit t-shirt” search regularly. Again, I’ve come to know what to expect with this query. I rock vintage Detroit shirts regularly.

But in this same week or so, that search is absolutely littered with Detroit sports jerseys of all stripes and vintage, NONE of which are actually t-shirts or even have the term t-shirt in their title or description.

Had acquaintances relay stories of searching for blues records and their searches being filled with blue colored vinyl pressings, or searching for a rare 78 of Lewis Black “Corn Liquor Blues” and instead turning up tons of comedy albums by the comedian of the same name.

I feel like this is bullshit and is only further pushing me towards Discogs and Etsy to get my vinyl and vintage shirt fix.

So in celebration…I share with you a record from a Detroit label I’d MUCH rather show up without explicitly even searching it. A mambo on Fortune is a sight to behold. I’ve definitely got room in my life for more of this.

For the giveaway…write in the comments what you’re go-to eBay searches are AND what you’re seeing differently from them lately, if anything.

Winner will get a blues record or a blue vinyl record or something that is only tangentially connected to what they’re actually looking for. Good luck.

In Hawaii we have nothing. No record stores, no book stores, no venues for concerts. We travel or buy everything from the internet. I love records 99% of my collection is from eBay and discogs. I usually dream up a band search by records it’s the only medium I own btw. Then filter by lowest price. I work my way from there. Usually to a point of ocd I slowly collect t a persons album discography and sometimes more. I used to collect tool concert posters. Or tool memorabilia. I have every single record that put out plus many bootlegs and most of the band members side projects on record. I’d its not on record it just a mixed tape. You can take that to the bank. As far as changes I see a lot of foreign. Market attempts to bandwagon on search terms. If it’s a venue event they sell posters and T-shirt’s with graphics that are recycled and projected but not the real deal. I sold most of my collection through Facebook but I’m not willing to perpetuate their system any longer. I feel it’s unhealthy for society as it’s being currently handled. Anyways I have a bit more of my poster collection to release into the wild. eBay has been on my mind as of lately.

The last time I searched on E-Bay, for something that would relate. Was got a Dr. Hook album. Sloppy seconds. My dad turned me on to them. And I live them ever since. But the search was a solid one. Given me more then I asked for. And I found a a nice copy. But if I can give a little advice. It would be in your best interest to ftick with discog. Enjoy the summer everybody….!

Wait, that’s a kink in the search results? I go to eBay for the tangential, not-quite-looking-for-that suggestions when I’m on the hunt for something with a little age or that might be otherwise discontinued. Diggin’ that mambo, too, thanks!

“Chris Crown Spartans” – results bring up a lot of string bands. I will eventually find that Hello Christmas Tree single.

One of my main searches is “Nook”, under the “Records” category. Nook was a label used by “Fenton Records” from Sparta, MI. They put out a bunch of 45’s in the 60’s. For some reason, in the last week, I am having the same situation happening. It says i have new “Nook” “Records” to view, and what is showing up has NOTHING Nook at all. It’s not in the title, description….nothing! It’s really pissing me off. Almost/sometimes to the point of just skipping over it. My other searches seem to be working fine.

I search Captain Beefheart in vinyl records and have never been disappointed. It’s “unconditionally guaranteed” to never fail.

I like using the sites that search eBay for misspelled listings… trying to get a fair price on a rare White Stripes piece of course!
