BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK...AND GIVEAWAY!

Asheton Asheton Kvaran Whipple

"Forward Motion" b/w "This Dance"

scum stats: limited to 250 copies on white vinyl

As a brother with a sister and a brother, as a fan of sibling bands, as a fan of the Asheton family, a supporter of limited edition colored vinyl...this single drops all kinds of nuggets that feel just straight-up tailored for my supreme appreciation and enjoyment.

Featuring local Michigan roustabout Ragnar Kvaran on guitar, Stooge Scott Asheton on drums, his sister Kathy (who's previous recorded musical efforts seem mostly limited to an impossible to find Kvaran cassette) on bass and vocals, and Tony Whipple (a resume mostly of studio engineering) on drums...this motley assortment delivers a strong, palpable pair of tunes, all muscle, no extraneous bullshit, just...smart.

Both songs are propelled by Kathy's head-turning vocals, narratively all-knowing, all lithe and graceful and sonorant, something shockingly absent from approximately 95% of singing that seems to cross my desk. Why have we not heard from her before?!?!?!

As a limited local Detroit-area release for tomorrow's Record Store Day drop (check out TMR, UHF, Dearborn Music and Ripe Records), this one will certainly be a difficult disc to find. But that's where I come in to share the wealth. I've got a couple extra copies sitting here for a giveaway.

In the comments section below, post something about siblings...working with them, working against them, the beauty of the inextricable bond one shares with them. I'll pick the best couple comments and shoot them a copy of this single in an effort to share the love. Everyone else...call up your Detroit connects and track one of these suckers down.

My brother and I didn’t particularly like Each other in middle school. I think I remember rating him out for saying the f word and he got grounded. which I think is why he pulled this. In the 6th grade you either want no one to look at you or anyone. I was a keep my head down and draw kind of kid and hated any attention. My brother did little jobs around the office like a little intern or something. idk why he did it. but he was pretty good chums with the principal (who I still talk to to this day). and somehow convinced him at a assembly to make the whole room stand and clap for me. the moment he sees me. to this day he will make a room do it. but my brother thought it was the funniest thing in the world. he will do it at family functions. Anyways kids caught on and did it every time they saw me. I don’t get it. I don’t get why they liked it. but to this day. I move away from Nashville to go to college, and someone who I knew back then starts it up again. while it’s only him (cause what college kid cares for that shit) I still have to endure this weird punishment for telling my mom my little brother said Fuck. I recently moved back to Nashville and was out driving and low and behold saw my old principal on the road. he made eye contact me at that red light and clapped until it turned green. Knowing him im sure I’ll hear the words “Everybody. let’s all Clap for Maeve.” again.

I recall that once, when I was around 10, my little sister (around 4 at the time), saw how an older boy (I’d say about 11 or 12) was saying something nasty to me during our school’s lunchtime. She came straight to us, looked very seriously at the poor guy, and with no hesitation told him that if she ever saw him again bothering me she’ll had to smack him. The guy flew away with bright red cheeks. She’s always been great (and a little crazy, haha).

My brother and I in high school did the normal things together, drink party start a band but the best was on Halloween. Now you have to remember it was the beginning of the 90’s and everything wasn’t out in the open like it is today so he goes dressed up as a condom. Principal says costume is too much and needs to be taken off. So what can we do to correct the situation? We go for couple lunch beers and send him back dressed as a pregnant nun with a sign on his back that says “ I was forced to take off the condom”. Just one of the many great times had with my brothet

When I was in my senior year of high school, my younger brother and I were obsessed with guitar hero and rock band. We were both at moments in our lives in which we were discovering our musical tastes. One day after having just beaten Sweet Child O’ Mine on expert level when we each looked at each other and came to the same realization. Why were we wasting hours on this video game when we could learn the real thing? We each saved up and headed over to our local music shop, the Guitar Bar to buy our first guitars. I chose a mid nineties Mexican Strat, he chose an Ibanez Strat-like beginner guitar. When we took our new guitars home, we made a bet that whoever played better by the end of the year owed the other $50. I thought I had the advantage. I was just about to begin College and I was sure I would make friends who would teach me to play. One year later, I dug deep and handed him the $50 dollars after hearing him play the main riff from Whole Lotta Love. I couldn’t believe how far he had come. Turns out he saved up, paid for private lessons, and then spent every waking moment of his high school life with that guitar. It’s about 15 years down the road now, and I’m still leagues behind him.

When we are together we dance like the floor is on fire. We bring the spirit. You bring strings. Time to spin like outterworld things!

I think my favorite brother sister combo was Karen and Richard Carpenter (assuming Jack and Meg do not count). No disrespect to the Osmonds. Anyone else with a brother sister music combo they think is good? There are so many choices if you include brothers in a band or sisters in a band that I do not want to mention them here.

My older brother collects vinyls and has over 800 and counting. We lost our other brother in 2017. My older brother just gave me our late brother’s vinyls for my daughter and I to listen to. I feel his spirit when I listen to those songs and the music brings back memories from when we were kids in the 1970s. My daughter lost her brother (my son) in 2017 also. They were going to go to a concert that year but I decided to go with her in his place. I contacted the band and was able to surprise her with a meet and greet. We felt that my son was there with us that evening. My late father instilled a love of music in all of us while we were growing up. We were always surrounded by music. Music has a timeless way to bond people together without limits through memories and spirit.

I’m the youngest of 3 brothers and our relationships have definitely changed a lot over the years. I was the brunt of their abuse for easily the first 14 years of my life, but we’re a lot closer now, even though we’re more physically distanced now. I got a scholarship to college for an essay I wrote about hitting my oldest brother in the head with a baseball bat after a long day of making fun of me while we played pick-up baseball in our community. (I swear I’m not violent – I’m a doctor now!) But now we do our best to have a yearly brother’s trip. We hiked to Havasu Falls the year before it became all tourist-y and we went to the International Banana Museum and Slab City in Southern California a few years back. We had tickets to go to Denver to see Pearl Jam this past April but it obviously got canceled. Hopefully we’ll be able to schedule something again soon – always great when we can all be together!

My family is from Upstate New York and we had some really wild winters to deal with. One time while playing outside I buried my younger sister’s hair in the snow and it hardened up to the point where she couldn’t break loose. When I went back inside my mom made me a cup of hot chocolate and asked where Emily was. I told her she was still playing outside and when my mom peeked out all she could see was this pink snowsuit wiggling around on the ground. Lucky for me my sister and I are really close but I still laugh so hard when we bring this story up.
