BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK...AND GIVEAWAY!

Asheton Asheton Kvaran Whipple

"Forward Motion" b/w "This Dance"

scum stats: limited to 250 copies on white vinyl

As a brother with a sister and a brother, as a fan of sibling bands, as a fan of the Asheton family, a supporter of limited edition colored vinyl...this single drops all kinds of nuggets that feel just straight-up tailored for my supreme appreciation and enjoyment.

Featuring local Michigan roustabout Ragnar Kvaran on guitar, Stooge Scott Asheton on drums, his sister Kathy (who's previous recorded musical efforts seem mostly limited to an impossible to find Kvaran cassette) on bass and vocals, and Tony Whipple (a resume mostly of studio engineering) on drums...this motley assortment delivers a strong, palpable pair of tunes, all muscle, no extraneous bullshit, just...smart.

Both songs are propelled by Kathy's head-turning vocals, narratively all-knowing, all lithe and graceful and sonorant, something shockingly absent from approximately 95% of singing that seems to cross my desk. Why have we not heard from her before?!?!?!

As a limited local Detroit-area release for tomorrow's Record Store Day drop (check out TMR, UHF, Dearborn Music and Ripe Records), this one will certainly be a difficult disc to find. But that's where I come in to share the wealth. I've got a couple extra copies sitting here for a giveaway.

In the comments section below, post something about siblings...working with them, working against them, the beauty of the inextricable bond one shares with them. I'll pick the best couple comments and shoot them a copy of this single in an effort to share the love. Everyone else...call up your Detroit connects and track one of these suckers down.

The bond i shared with my late brother Steve Hall was our love of vinyl, i got all his hand downs in the early 70s, my first records were don’t shoot me im only the piano player, Alice Cooper Killer, Mc5 kick out the jams ( and yes i still have it, uncensored cover Canadian press) he managed 2 Sam The Record Man stores in Toronto in the 70s, miss him everyday, he had a Marantz system and i had a flip open portable player, but i didn’t mind, it was that or watch the 12" black and white tv i had in my bedroom,

I am an only child. My whole life I wanted a younger brother (not sure why lol) and and older sister ( for her friends). That never panned out, but I now have 4 sons (16, 15, 7, 6). I sit and watch them interact and love every minute. The age difference doesnt matter for them, they refer to themselves as “4Brothers” and my oldest is getting it tattooed on his arm next year. My 15 year old (fellow vinyl collector and waited in the rain with me for a while to get into TMR Detroit for the grand opening. He is the one who is teaching my little guys the care for albums, the diversity of music, and now 3 of my 4 sons have amazing music preferences (oldest is a lost cause with this..lol). Love hearing and reading every ones comments and even happier that I now have a front row seat to the craziness of siblings! Cheers everyone #Blacklivesmatter

My sister were/are awesome. My oldest sister, now deceased, was my hero growing up. She was the cool one, a little bit flower power but full on ’70’s. She was my introduction to Bob Marley and Pink Floyd. She took me in for a year as a teenager when I needed a little mentoring. Fuck cancer. My other sister is three years older than me, so we butted heads growing up a bit but she always looked out for me. I think she’s such an amazing person and love that we meet up every year or two on a new travel adventure. She introduced me to Zion National Park and I introduced her to Machu Picchu. I am blessed to have had two awesome sisters and pretty damn happy one of them is still around.

I’ve got a brother and a sister. I’ve lived with my brother for 30 of my 45 years. Not just a home, but once I bought a house I invited him to mover in. We get along well, and it helps that he’s a handyman. If there’s something I can’t figure out then he usually can. I also saved him once. He was walking on some ice on a pond when we were young. I saw him start to fall though and caught him. So I guess he kind of owes me.

I’m an only child and my husband is the eldest of 4 and together we now have 2 kids. I have to defer to my husband’s experience with how our kids relate to and treat eachother as I have no frame of reference for siblings. I always said I wanted to have more than one kid so that when they were older they could have each other to deal with their aging parents! One of the rare silver linings of this wretched pandemic is how much closer my kids have become. They are still young (only 7 and 9) but I hope they remember spending every waking moment together through spring and summer 2020 as a really weird, but happy time in their lives.

I was the youngest of 4 kids growing up. Growing up with my brothers and sister allowed me to be a sponge to soak up their hobbies and passions and it helped me find my own. My oldest brother and I share a love for building and wood working, my sister and I enjoy creative writing, and my brother closest to me share an interest in sports. Sharing a passion with a sibling brings a different dimension to the table. There’s years of understanding how the other person works – you know their portfolio, you were there for it – you know how to bring out the best and worst in them, and vise versa.

When I was in high school my mom remarried and had another baby boy. I’m no longer the youngest! There’s five of us now and I have a little brother to share my passions with. My little brother is 17 years old now and me and him share a love for music and photography. I have been showing him my record collection, and when he goes to college I plan on gifting him my current turn table, and letting him borrow from my collection.

If gifted this record I promise to share it with others. Because that’s what my favorite thing about growing up with siblings has been – sharing.

My brother and I only got along when we were really young, but when we were older, there would still be moments when he would show he actually cared about me as more than just a punching bag. I had gotten in trouble at school for something dumb, and my parents were beyond furious with me. Later that day, we went to a K-mart and my brother had known I had had a rough day. What could mean more to a 9 year old kid than an action figure of his favorite DBZ character? My brother ended up using his allowance to buy me exactly that, and I still cherish that memory today. (It was Trunks by the way)
