Is this still happening? How long have we all been here? Like, is time standing still? How heavy are my arms? I can hear my blood flowing…do you guys hear it? I mean, I want to win, but for some reason my desire to win is being overshadowed by my desire to eat high sodium foods. Wait, do I have to pass a test to get the TEST pressing? Not sure if the giveaway is over or not, but I’ll throw out a story. My one and only weed story exists solely because of this album. April 19th, 2018: I had never touched weed once in my life. April 20th, 2018: When you wake up on 420 to the news that there’s a new Sleep album, how many signs can the universe give?? Well, I rushed to Newbury Comics in hopes of snagging one of the split vinyl, but all three copies they had received were sold out. Determined not to let that bog down the one 4/20 I intended to celebrate, I called my stoner friend to inform her that I’d be joining her this year. At 3:15, Dopesmoker started blaring through my speakers, riffs filling the room. I don’t know a better way to get into the mood. At about 4:17, Dopesmoker’s final riff faded. There was a moment of silence, and then it started: The Sciences. What an opener! So distorted and fuzzy, punctuated by enormous thuds like falling boulders. I loved the first song, great on its own but with a very real sense of tension, as if warning you of the heaviness to come. Hyped out of my mind, I leaned in to take a hit precisely at 4:20, unaware that in doing so, I synced up my first ever bong hit with the one in the song, Left Hand Suzuki Style style. Granted, The Marijuanaut’s Theme featured none of the coughing (and none of my friend’s laughter), but all the same. I’m not one to equate drugs to religious experiences, but listening to an epic about weed monks on a holy pilgrimage, then syncing bong hits with the legendary Sleep is about as close as I think I can possibly get. Needless to say, sitting there getting high off my ass, The Sciences absolutely did not disappoint. I’m not sure what was thicker, the smoke or the riffs!
