I also really love the B side of this record with Dean’song. It would be awesome if Jack did a Blue Series with Dean.
This B side (eclectic and intense) lead me to Dean’s version, as well as his entire album. TMR continues to introduce me to such fantastic music from one project to the next. Keep ‘em coming, y’all.
@Kali Durga, what a beautiful expression of your emotions. Yes, the beauty in the season, in the world, mixed with all the pain creates an almost indescribable experience, listening to Lazaretto. I know the connection you describe that Jack and band conveys through this album and through this year has struck the heart and mind of us all.
Went out driving today through the countryside around the West VA/Maryland border. Came around a curve at dusk to see rolling fields stretching out from the road and the sun setting behind the mountains beyond, just as Jack and Lillie Mae’s voices soared at the end of Parallel. As sad as that song is in light of Ikey’s death, in that moment it gave me such a rush of euphoria that I burst out laughing. I’m so grateful to Jack and the whole Lazaretto band/family for gifts like that from this album. When all is said and done, I don’t know whether Lazaretto will be remembered as one of Jack’s more notable records but, between certain things in the Vault 20 book, this year’s tour, and moments like today, I’ve had so many emotional experiences connected with it that it’s becoming very, very special to me.
…that’s “Love Sick”, one of my favorites.
So true- what Jack brings to another artist or bands song is a whole new sound and to these ears, always superior. I can’t think of one he doesn’t refresh/improve. (If he completed a Led Zep, i’d bet it could at least equal it) From the Greenhornes’ “Shelter of Your Arms”, Brenden Benson’s “Good to Me”Live Sick & “One More Cup of Coffee,”-any Dylan(my teenage hero), “Love is Blindness”, “I don’t know what to do…”,“Conquest”, “John the Revelator”, St. James Infrmy", “Death Letter”, I’m Shakin, all those blues he brings to life! The list is so very long! Ok. That’s it. I’m ordering this 7" tonite.
The more times I listen to this, the more I keep thinking of Aquamarine’s comment. Every separate element of Parallel is beautiful in its way, from Fats’ pedal steel at the beginning, to Jack’s voice, to Daru’s thumping drums, to Lillie Mae’s mandolin, to Ikey’s piano throughout, but the combination of the vocals with his Moog at the end brings a great big lump to my throat.
I think that if I were one of Jack’s peers, I would be both honored and nervous to know he planned to cover one of my songs. His version of Parallel is a perfect example. Like most of his covers, he’s turned it into a whole new song. Just gorgeous.
I love this version of Parallel, and Ikey’s wonderful contributions make it all the more poignant. Terrific performances by everyone.
It was written by Both Dean and Brendan Benson, btw.
Ok.seriously. (Note to self: Thread topic into noodle of reason. Needle. Needle of reason) :-P Before I lose it, my thought is, after hearing Dean’s amazing Parallel, what Jack’s imagination and skills could bring to it! Must order this little gem.
