ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY RECORD OF THE WEEK SPECIAL BOOK GIVEAWAY

Car Crash

“Execution”, “I Don’t Care” b/w “Bright Future”

scum stats: 200 copies on black vinyl

I am shocked to see that this record was released in 2015. That feels like eons ago. I’m pretty sure I was hipped to this by the K Records email list but instead of buying it straight from the source I put it on a running list of “need to purchase” items that I kept in my pocket for a few months. This copy came straight from Grimey’s, the record store down the street from TMR that is always happy to special order items of this nature when I request them on the regular. These three tracks have been sitting contently in my “to listen to” pile for at least a year. I’ll get better, I promise.

Jams here are gems, all high energy punk ’n’ roll, a vibe that feels properly updated from the mid-90’s heyday when Rip Off Records was king. Tight, lockstep, there is absolutely nothing wrong or out of place on this record. I could (and should) listen to shit like this for days without ever tiring. I feel like my tastes exist in a previously undefined ether-region where something of the approach/style/tone needs to be vaguely familiar, yet anything slavishly rehashed or redundant throws up immediate red flags and shade. Such a fine line and Car Crash is on the proper side of it. Sold out from the label, it’s worth the troll around to find one elsewhere in the bottomless pit internet. I believe the band is Japan and that should only further your appreciation.

I love 45’s existing as 8 minute time capsules into an exact period. No fussing about, make a statement, make it quick and leave it behind for the rest of the world to uncover. I’m STILL turning up wonderfully brilliant 45’s, forgotten for decades, quite regularly. Outside of love for my family and time spent with them, it is no doubt my absolute favorite thing to do.

I’ve no indication that this band is not absolutely killing it live. In my mind, they do. Highly recommended you search this one out..

SIDE NOTE: I guess I’ve been writing about records here for just about 52 weeks, only missing a handful of times when travel or fatherhood became prohibitive. Hooray for me, hooray for you. I’ve got an extra copy of a wonderful book called “Why Vinyl Matters” by Jen Otter Bickerdike that features stellar interviews with all sorts of folks in the “biz” speaking about vinyl. Including yours truly. So in the comments here, in the spirit of the book, these weekly missives and everything we do at Third Man, let us know your thoughts on WHY VINYL MATTERS. I’ll pick the winner, as objectively as possible, and they’ll get the book mailed right to their door. How cool is that?

Thanks for reading for the past year and here’s to another 52 weeks.

Vinyl matters because it’s the root of music and its quality is outstanding. Thank you to TMR for help reviving it and making it accessible for future generations!

Vinyl is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

Thanks Jacob… what i had really wanted to say when i started was something like what Dave Lister was getting at to be honest…. Vinyl is more like art that can stand as a presence on its own with its own stature which is what separates art from craft…. and yes that kind of presence does inspire! …. maybe the arrival of my Vault 33 has something to do with being so hype…. Your vote of confidence matters too… much appreciated!!!

I was going to throw my thoughts in the mix, but I don’t know if anyone can say it better than Apple Blossom. Vinyl must matter because it inspires such poetry and prose in a comment box.

Oh…. yeah…. vinyl matters… it matters like gravity matters and friction matters…….. it matters like washing your hands as a moment of sacred consideration matters……………… it matters like black lives matter in the serious nature of historic reverence like some form of social measure seriously imploring a policemen to think before they become judge and jury because that groove and that life cannot be replaced …… it matters every time those those plates have been ground for each moments a fan listens intently for the singular soulful grits and and pops like old friends in the grain between the sounds as if just one thoughtful hesitation could bring hush down in a crowd to acknowledge that someone like Ms. Etta James will make you know what it feels like to find the love of their life At Last………. the analogue pause found in the drop of a needle in just the right place… the intrepid silence as the runout groove clicks in for one more round…………. oh yes vinyl matters in more ways than just sound…. like the silence in the other room when your parent hears you messing around with one in their collection and you thinking you might be dj scratchin until you get backsided with no uncertain redirection………. vinyl matters in the blink of an eye like an ill mannered president that makes you wanna cry or bitch snap a penny from your fingers to see if you can hit that president in the back of his empty brain or skip that needle on to the next refrain…………… i have known that vinyl mattered since before my first job at a college radio station mixin thin duke bowie Heroes right into Station to Station………… vinyl mattered to me as the only way to know people i would never meet… …….vinyl matters beyond money and math as it orbits some forgotten atmosphere and it matters when you are standin right here…. Vinyl is rapidly becoming some sort of art and technology embracing embracing lost cultures waiting for the next naive fool to amplify a contraption … …… Vinyl commands attention and holds its own space and like an unruly guest can blow up a party in your face…………………… Vinyl is important because it has its own language and demands its own code it forces you to learn and if you don’t believe me then what how people react when you set it afire and make someone watch and smell it burn…………….. besides all that…. vinyl truly matters when all is said and done because vinyl has become a process through which respect is won…. yes vinyl matters…………… make no mistake… i would rather have the original gimme shelter vinyl instead of a birthday cake………… thanks ben blackwell and jack for giving me the chance to share all this with people who really know the deal

Vinyl matters because it keeps music real. It’s one of the few art forms where the listener/ observer participates and makes the art happen.

Because it shares with live music the fact that it both involves and requires all five senses, and thus you have to be fully present for it in every respect, as do the friends who share that communal moment. If you look closely at the grooves, you can all see it getting louder or quieter before your very eyes. And it’s as fallible as humanity, with all its tendency to scratches, hisses, and pops. Easier to bond with than an mp3. (Not an entry, just an observation.)
