Digital Transfer of Elvis' 1st Recording

Digital Transfer of Elvis' 1st Recording

We are getting pretty excited for Record Store Day, which is... NEXT WEEKEND! So, we figured we'd give you another taste of the magic that is Elvis' first recording "My Happiness." As you know by now, In June of 1953, Presley made his first recording directly to acetate at Sun Studios (Memphis Recording Service) in Memphis, TN. This one-of-a-kind piece of music history was recently purchased by Jack White at auction, and on February 26th, 2015, Jack met with legendary music archivist Alan Stoker at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN to have this "holy grail of rock n roll" digitally transferred so that we could repress it for the masses. A facsimile of this 10" record, using this transfer without alteration, will be available on Record Store Day, with a cleaned-up and re-mastered version of coming in the near future as a 7".

Check out this footage of Alan Stoker and Jack White as they make the transfer and peel back the label to discover a special surprise...

And, don't forget, Third Man Recording Service will be open for business on Record Store Day, recording you in the same way Elvis recorded "My Happiness" — direct-to-acetate in our Blue Room. We begin taking appointments tomorrow morning at 10am CST for that, so check back here for the scheduling link if you're interested. Recordings will cost $100 and that price will include a custom label, made on-the-spot as well as the 10" facsimile of Elvis' "My Happiness." Learn more about this in our Record Store Day Part I of III Announcement.

@nswilson87 please read my statement below.

Is this available worldwide or just at Third Man? My local record store just released a list of titles they’re getting in for RSD….no sign of “My Happiness”

Why Elvis is our most iconic celebrity impression: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2015/04/10/impressions_series_why_elvis_is_our_most_iconic_celebrity_impression.html Gotta say, I think I prefer Jack’s way of keeping the King alive through this record. The emotions it summons up seem more immediate, pure, and beautiful, untainted by cheesiness or hokiness. I’m so excited for next Saturday. (See you there, o’ cogitatin’ feline)

@BruceDickenson so the deal is for this specific release you have to come to Nashville to Third Man and line up with us to try and score your own 10in Elvis record . But they did say TMR will be making a cleaned up Sun reissue 7in later in the year. So if you can’t make it don’t fret you too will have a chance to have these songs in Your collection. @Quizze they did say in the weeks before when this was announced that they are using a stack of old labels they found. I could be wrong But I also think I remember it be I g said they were Sun labels. The idea is that these will look and sound as much like the original copy as possible. And since TMR doesn’t miss a beat I am guessing they will have little tears and made to look aged etc. Just getting more excited over here. “Road trip! Nashville here we come!” Can’t wait to meet up with everyone!

Wait…. Did he say Mono??? Oh lawd…. Let the fervor begin!!!

Thee swiss army knife sealed the deal for me…. that and the Prisonaires being the flipside label mates… Wonder if our labels will have the sun treatment beneath it as well? Oh man! URP must be meltin up a storm over there…. Please no storms no storms no storms for RSD!!! Thank you for sharing that moment of revelation also because it was a stunning image of the light shining through the top side and providing glimpses of the detailing on that… Dreamy!

Wendy
