Detroit Rock City Discussion Recap

Last night, Third Man proudly hosted a panel discussing five decades of Detroit rock 'n' roll. With panelists spanning across all five decades, the topics discussed were wide-reaching, informative, and often times humorous. The night began with a screening of 15 minutes of 16mm footage of the MC5 and the Stooges that had only been shown publicly once previously. The conversation was peppered with unreleased studio recordings by The Chosen Few (featuring a pre-Stooges Ron Asheton and Scott Richardson), The Go (featuring Jack White on guitar), and The White Stripes. Third Man will make a podcast download of the evening's conversation available in the near future. Sorry folks, the recordings were for the live audience only. Copies of Steve Miller's Detroit Rock City are still available for purchase in our Nashville storefront.

Congratulations to the Detroit Sound Conservancy Oral History Project which started a Kickstarter fund on 9 July and have already met, and are exceeding their goal, of $5,000. I thought such a project would have needed a lot more funds for what they are planning to do. Got to applaud the DSCOHP for not being greedy with their request for funds and it’s pretty impressive what they plan to do with the money raised (found the link to their Kickstarter on TMR’s twitter site today).

YAY!!! FOR PODCAST DOWNLOAD!!! You guys do know you could blather all day and night into a podcast and we’d all love it to bits, right?

Thanks for the experience. Since the city of Detroit declared bankruptcy today, a fund raising concert at TMR for the archiving of the music history of Detroit with Detroit native musician/singer/songwriters would be a really good idea right now. It’s not unusual in Nashville to attend fund raising concerts for various charities or musicians who have medical expenses and no health care. A $100 ticket per person for some great Detroit talent wouldn’t be too much to ask if all proceeds of the money taken in goes to the archiving project. We all know that the Detroit music history project will bring the story to Nashville and Third Man Records. It will make a lot of people aware of where a little bit of Detroit’s music went to. I would try to get a ticket for such a show if the tickets don’t sell out too fast. Once the show sells out is there a way to actually air such a show and have people make a minimum donation to watch the show and also auction off items before and after the show (without involving other auction companies like eBay)? Since it would be a fund raiser it shouldn’t be free for Vault members but it could be made into a Vault Package later on.
