"Mull It Over"
scum stats: limited to 50 hand-numbered copies
Nashville's most resolute Beatles devotee sets the scene with his pristine, picture-perfect recreation of lite-psych with Sgt. Pepper-inspired moves. Hoffman's voice carries an endearing softness that I don't seem to recall on previous recordings. Others might call it maturity or evolution, but I think there's a lot of tricks up his sleeve and we've still yet to even grasp them all. Definitely thirsty for more here.
The rubber-stamped covers for this lathe-cut single are strong, straddling the line of "is this printed?" and slight imperfection that hits straight to my heart. I'm offering copy #6 here to whatever comment here is arbitrarily the "best" here. Maybe talk about something you had to mull over. Maybe just say something funny. "Best" is solely at my discretion and the comment must be posted by midnight on June 30th. Godspeed.
If you wanna do a good deed and just support the artist without "winning" you can order here.
I’m visiting Nashville for the first time in September. I’m meeting pals from Vancouver to see Crowded House but I’m planning a pilgrimage to the house of Third Man Records. Can you recommend a couple of other record stores to visit while I’m in town Mr Blackwell, sir? Ta muchly.
What do you get when you throw a piano down a mine shaft?
A flat miner
Talk about mull, Daniel’s is quite the post; “mull” though, at least to me, is a infrequently seen term that I happen to quite like. As well as the fact it has multiple definitions, though it’s use here, to ponder or contemplate, is how I typically use the word. Also, “Mull of Kintyre.”
Wanda Jackson is the best. I mean “Funnel of Love” come on!
Homestead Flea Market sold me a copy of Wanda Jackson’s “The Best of Wanda Jackson” record for $2.50 (featuring her hit German language song ‘Santo Domingo) and when I got home I realized it’s an autographed copy, written in ballpoint pen. The original owner, Kim Geisen, wrote a translation of Wanda’s scrawl next to the autograph:
TO KIM: Best wishes Wanda Jackson.
A pirate walks into a bar.
The bartender says, “Hey Mr. Pirate, You got a steering wheel sticking out of your zipper.”
The pirate replies, “Arrrgggghh, And it’s driving me nuts!!!”
True story.

I got a new job. I work so hard I sleep when I don’t.
I listened to Tim Heideckers new record last night titled, “Highschool.” He wrote it during covid and it really gives you a sense of comtemplation and longing, I really enjoyed it. I have always liked Tim’s music and his comedy styling is very “Kaufman-eqsue,” so you never really know where the line is, or if he’s being sincere or not. Maybe he doesn’t know either. I was on a forum talking about the new record with people and they reminded me about Tim’s past internet reputation.
Tim went head to head with the Q Anon 4Chan folk way back in the day and it got messy, (He wrote a song called, “for chan” about fat neckbeards on keyboards). The strange part is, a lot of these people were Fans of Tim before the craziness, which seemed to hurt them when he targeted them.
Although provoked, before they started attacking Tim, they said something along the lines of, “I used to be a big fan of yours.” The heat eventually went away but it added a brand new Layer to Tim. Recently in an office podcast session with Kids in the Hall, Scott Thompson, the king of Comedy Punks said to Tim that he was a fan until he got political, which got me thinking.
Where do our identities begin and end in the court of public opinion? It’s almost as though when you react to someone, you’re almost trying to convince them that their wrong while also convincing them you’re smart all at the same time, it’s an interesting phenomena…
When I was speaking with these people about the album, they mentioned couldn’t listen to it because of Tim’s past and politics. I loved the record and his past didn’t have any effect on me at all.
With the Roe vs. Wade overturn today, there’s a lot of passionate people on whatever side, slinging whatever heat they can into the void. (I’ll make this perfectly clear to whomever is reading this… I’m always pro-choice.. for everything…) Giant echo chambers of people that cannot be bothered to do anything else but echo at the same frequency.
I thought about Jack’s statement today too, I don’t personally have a comment on it but I’m glad he and everyone else is saying something, what I didn’t like was the comments being turned off, there’s no discussion, no debate, no conversation, no chamber for many voices, just a singular. voice. full. stop. no. exceptions. Should we be doing this? I thought a little while about it… I guess when you scream into the void, sometimes you just don’t want an answer. You just need to be heard.
When Tim went head to head with people back in the day, he did the same thing, then when it got too heavy, he invited anyone on to his show to speak about whatever was happening, right, left, middle, whatever. No one got anything done and people disagreed anyway but there was great, grand discussion happening for the people listening. The callers were able to ask why, they were able to go back and forth in their feelings, they had an open forum to sort it all out and we were there to hear them.
After it all calmed down, Tim got extremely left wing, it’s almost as though his opposition propelled him further than he was willing to go on his own (left and right ideals in America have always had EXTREMES that sound so strange, they belong in their own world). Tim created a total mirrored political melt-down reaction and from then on, I don’t think he’s ever ventured center ever again (him screaming a Joe Rogan is a good example of this: https://youtu.be/EO5q1m2kC00 )
I can see both sides of the scale, I can see the right and wrong facts, I can see the egos, I can see the many forms of identity fighting for survival but if I am to survive on this planet, I have to pick a side, or live as a third partied hermit. Am I a centralist? A libertarian? A Canadian? I don’t want an identity… It doesn’t serve me, or my fellow humans well.
Anyway, when someone asks me if I like a certain artist, I have a feeling I’ll be saying, “I love their records but I’m not a fan of their politics.” A lot, which is fine by me but depending on the person, I should have enough energy to engage in discussion.
I’m not sure how to end this and I don’t really care if I win. This record of the week has forced me to write something. I always struggle to start. No one else asks me how I’m thinking or feeling, but somehow you bribing me with free records gets it out of me.
Whatever works man.
