BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Broken Yoyo

Send Your Money b/w Grease Monkey

The music here is just kinda whatever. SUPER produced with plenty "of the era" 1980s production hallmarks...chorused guitars, gated snare drums...if you know you know. I can't really say it's bad, but I certainly can't claim it's good either. Aside from what sounds like a steel drum melody on the "Grease" side, the entirety of the sounds here are painfully mediocre.

The best part of this record is truly the note I found tucked inside. Without any attribution, it reads...

Don't play this record. This band doesn't comprehend "benefit" and charged us $400 to play at ours. Therefore we don't know what to do with free records

Oh man this leaves me with so many questions! First off...how do you even get someone to pay you for playing a benefit? Were they Jedi Mind Trick masters or some shit? Also...what was the benefit? Furthermore...$400 for a gig in 1985(ish?) seems like GREAT money.

The address of the label that released this single (Rüde Records) is a mile away from the house I grew up in. Forty years later it feels just downright odd that anything creative or musical was happening in what I would've considered an otherwise dead corridor of the neighborhood.

Of additional note is all of the musicians listed on this release, Discogs shows that none of them ever released anything outside of Broken Yoyo. That's a bit of an "ouch" if I've ever seen one.

All in all, any record from four decades ago that is usurped by a random piece of ephemera stashed in the sleeve...that's definitely a notable experience.

Yep, very eighties, not bad and looking at the band, don’t know what happened but nobody associated with them went on to do anything else. That makes me wonder but also not surprising. Perhaps they needed the $400.00 to pay the bills :(
