BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK + GIVEAWAY

Archie and the Bunkers

Play the Damned EP

scum stats: my copy on black, apparently there’s a limited quantity on black with red and yellow splatter

If middle fingers on the front cover didn’t piss me off or have me rolling my eyes, then that’s saying something.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for younger folks playing rock and roll. The drums/organ, big brother/little brother duo of Archie and the Bunkers are good. Their heads seem on straight, they’re influenced by all the right shit from the past. And I honestly think that if they keep at it, they will make something GREAT.

As for Damned covers, they dug a little below the surface, ignoring the obvious covers like “New Rose” or “Neat Neat Neat” and I have to give ‘em credit for that. I never spent much time with the Damned, really just a little bit with the first album. So besides the lead-off track, these songs are all kinda fresh to me.

I think the band is still figuring things out and I predict in another year, two tops, they will put out a masterpiece. Until then, this record (and the rest of their increasingly-expanding catalog) serve as moderate placeholders.

In my never-ending quest to keep you weirdos engaged, post in the comments about your favorite releases where one artist covers exclusively another artist. Don’t just LIST something, convince me as to why it is important. Can be Pussy Galore doing Exile, Sonic Youth doing the Fall, Dylan (or Willie) doing Sinatra, whatever. Maybe turn me on to something I’m unaware of? Anyway, most enlightening comment (as determined by me) gets an original Sub Pop pressing of the White Stripes covering the songs of Captain Beefheart. See the connection there? Deadline is a week from today, so get your shit in here already.

Chris Cornell covers -
Led Zeppelin – Thank You, Whole Lotta Love, Immigration Song
Beatles – A Day in the Life, Ticket to Ride
Dylan – The Times Are A Changin, I Threw it All Away

Not sure if this one has been listed already, but I gotta go with Johnny Cash’s American IV…his take on “Hurt” was so raw, so real, that I forget that it was ever a cover at all.

The first cover I heard from any artist that blew me away was Chris Cornell covering Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. Then he covered Led Zeppelin’s Thank You, John Lennon’s Imagine, Bruce Springsteen’s State Trooper, Nothing Compares to You by Prince. There were others that he covered. Every single one blew me away and I was lucky enough to see them played live at several of his acoustic shows. You may want to check these out because they take music to a new level in my opinion. RIP CC

I am NOT looking for individual cover songs. That shit’s basic.

I want releases where an artist covers at least two songs of another individual artist. Does not HAVE to be covering an album in its entirety, but that doesn’t disqualify it either.

Although he’s most recently known for covering T. Swift’s 1989 album, Ryan Adams has had a history of covering entire albums by other artists. There’s an urban legend that’s been passed around for many years that he covered The Strokes’ entire “Is This It” album. It was never released, and after all of the Twitter drama last year, I’m sure we will never hear those recordings. If you want to get a little taste of how he can twist things up, Google “Ryan Adams Vampire Weekend.” About 7 years ago or so he began covering Vampire Weekend’s S/T album in its entirety. It can be found in a few black and white videos on YouTube. I believe he only made it three songs in before he ultimately got sidetracked with another project, but the stripped down acoustic versions are very beautiful. I hope you enjoy them

Ben can you confirm something for this rube? Are we talking about full album covers or just covering a bands song. So like some have mentioned Ryan Adams doing all of Tswift 1989 or like Jack White doing Whispering Sea by Loretta? Or am i overthinking this? Thank you.

Masaaki Hiro- Nippon Rock n Roll. The birth of Japanese Rokabirii. 1958-1960. I’ve always been fascinated by the effect that rock took on music and culture in our country. But the effect it took on the rest of the world is amazing. This guy was like the Japanese Elvis. He rocked and crooned but did it in his own style. Think pre 5678,s. But I challenge you to listen to his version of “Jenny Jenny” (recorded live ) and not be moved. http://youtu.be/1ESfh-SSuT8

My call is Marc Almond -Jacques

The soft cell singer recorded Paul Buck’s English language versions on Jacques Brel songs in 1989.
I bought it with low expectations as I was huge Brel fan at the time (still am), but Almond’s over the top, verging on camp, delivery, and being able to understand beyond my basic French brought Brels stories to life beyond the pure emotion I got from his delivery. Not for everybody but check it out.
