Roger Fenton's Wagon
scum stats: 500 copies?
A concept album with a storyline centered around Roger Fenton, the first-ever war photographer, and his experiences (both real and imagined) during the Crimean War in the 1850's...just TONS to dig into and get excited about here. I've already read up on the wikipedia entry for the Charge of The Light Brigade and was wonderfully reminded about the drama controversy surrounding Fenton's "Valley of the Shadow of Death" series of photos. And let's not forget about Florence Nightingale either.
Of particular interest and appreciation to me are the song-by-song notes from the artist, explaining the ideas and thoughts behind each track, backstories and interpretations, mysteries and inspirations...someone more full of themselves would leave all of this up to the listener to determine. But laying it all out...I think it ties the record together wonderfully.
Tootawl himself traffics a palatable UK-styled acoustic folk that just lends itself wonderfully to the subject matter here. A worthwhile way to spend an hour. If I had a pipe, this album would make me want to smoke it.
