Apparently this was released 3 years ago and I'm just noticing it now. I thought it was a new release timed with their little tour run right now which has them playing the Blue Room tonight on their way to Gonerfest.
New records by old friends...a tricky proposition. Do you value consistency over artistic exploration? Old hat for new tricks? Is it even possible to balance these disparate ideas.
Good news is that these songs embody what I have always loved about Tyvek while still exploring a new, exciting realm. A unconstrained elan, a reckless abandon, letting the chips fall where they may...DIY in the truest dedication to the form, to the functionality, to the spirit.
"I've Not Thought Once" is purely distilled Tyvek-ian perfection. As realized now as it was on their debut single. Scrappy, upbeat, punk in approach but not necessarily attitude. A delicate balance. I heart this.
There's a melodicism on "30th" that seems non-existent on the band's earlier work...and I like that. Flipping the disc over that vibe continues on "34th / Market" and putting it all together, I get the impression of walking down a city avenue, and the street names passing you by becoming markers, measurement, a running list in your head. What I assume to be the "Market" identified portion of this song shifts a little bit, but overall its swell, it's enjoyable, it earns its right to exist.
"We're Back" is more like "I've Not Thought Once" in that OG Tyvek superegotitistic minimalism. Overall, the balance of new feels and classic jams is superb here. STRONG recommendation.
Well you did say "strong recommendation " so I checked out a couple of songs. Really dig their vibe, I’ll keep Tyvek on my radar. Thanks!
