BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK
Spodee Boy
Neon Lights

scum stats: limited to 80 color printed covers, 200 black-and-white covers
The solo vehicle for Connor from Snooper, Spodee Boy ventures into the dusty world of twangy punk rock. The title track could very easily be mistaken for an outtake from the Gun Club's "Fire Of Love" LP...the guitar tone a dead ringer for Jeffrey Lee Pierce's on their cover of Robert Johnson's "Preaching The Blues."
The rest of the songs slosh along similarly strong ways, but "Neon Lights" is so clearly the standout here...just a legit song through and through.
The single is reliably solid, rewarding...I don't love this as much as I love Snooper, but all four songs are proof positive that there's still some legitimate blood to squeeze from the stone of the punk realm.

I dig the echo sound and big loud solo, just the right amount of feedback.
