Blackwell's Record of the Week
Ace of Spit

"Ace of Spit II"

scum stats: limited to 200 copies, hand-numbered on the dust sleeve. Mine reads 5/200

In terms of major American cities and the number of essential bands they've spawned, St. Louis has to be at the absolute rock bottom of that list and I struggle to comprehend exactly why that is. I mean, literally, I had to google "bands from St. Louis" and then the most recognizable name there was...Son Volt? Meaning I couldn't even come up with a prospective worthwhile entry.

(And yeah, I'm not exactly "down" with the bands from Las Vegas, which I would've maybe considered #2 or #3 on this list against Miami, but I can't reasonably deny their reach)

All that to say, I have the utmost excitement and joy at the recent emergence of Ace of Spit. From St. Louis. First off, first band name in QUITE some time that I literally stopped after seeing and thought to myself "that's a really good band name."

And for the tunes, the gnarly, like 10% surf adjacent rock and roll, the whiff of punk inspiration wafting through the air feels...steadfast in a manner that is unique for not being too simple or too complex, comfortably uncomplicated. Dare I say I feel like it's probably even more enjoyable in a live setting.

The conversation of late has frequently landed on the topic of "rock and roll resurgence" and I just feel like Ace Of Spit is as necessary and deserving as anyone to enjoy in the fruits of said bloom.

I STRONGLY suggest listening to this one, buying a copy (their first one ain't too shabby either) and getting onboard before that (surf) board becomes a bandwagon with Missouri plates.

Thank you! This was an easy quick buy. The first one was so good. I’m pretty sure I also got off your recommendation. I highly recommend!
