Elvis Presley
That's All Right b/w Blue Moon Of Kentucky
scum stats: there's a handful of variants...I recently read correspondence from Sam Phillips where he says that it took 8 days to sell the first 4000 copies. I'd bet that was the initial pressing quantity. Speaking with experts, I'm led to believe that the Sun 209 sold more than 100,000 copies before Elvis' contract transferred to RCA
I mean, what more can be said about this atomic bomb? Getting to tackle the write up for the Vault package had me excitedly delving back into all the history and lore that I immersed myself in when we released the "My Happiness" / "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" single however many years ago that was.
I personally own copies of the first three Presley singles on Sun. I managed to track down an affordable tranche of all five of the singles which are now slated for giveaway to one random Vault 59 subscriber. In the process, an extra copy of "That's All Right" ended up on my desk.
So nevermind that all these 7-inches (save for "Mystery Train") have the inescapable "Sun hiss" as they were mastered to the 78rpm specifications. Nevermind that I've heard these songs a billion times. The pure joy of just SEEING an original Sun 45 of any artist is enough to make my day.
So do yourself a favor and listen to this bastard for one minute and fifty-five seconds. It will put a smile on MY face knowing folks take direction and it'll put one on YOURS if you have any sort of discernible heartbeat or humanity left inside your slowly dying bag of flesh.
Always the many Journeys in one little ditty.
Took me this time back to the early 80s riding in a truck a brown truck(Chevy deluxe) with my grandpa. I could hardly see over the edge to see out the windshield. But that’s okay because there was music this music. And his blue and white macrame keychain swaying to the beat as we drove.
An undeniable foot tapper and bass slapper since day one. Looking forward to opening that Vault! I’m not a bag of flesh, Ben. I am brain controlled bone mech with meat armor and don’t you forget it!
I wonder if the sticks were really hitting the rim of a snare or something else… fun rhythm
I would be the happiest SOB in the world if I opened my Vault package and found these records on my lap!!!! I remember as a wee child, my father having Sun records of both Elvis and Johnny Cash. He would play them on his RCA EY-2 (I do have that restored to its glory). His favorite singer was Faron Young (on Capitol of course). I have pictures of him as a teenager decked out in clothes to replicate his favorite singer. I am not sure what ever happened to the Sun records, perhaps they were destroyed in the fire??!! Like I said, I was a wee lad but there was always something about the Sun label that meant so much, maybe it was a rare thing to see my dad happy. He was a coal miner in WV and had to struggle. It was rare to see him drop his guard and let go. These songs were his release I believe………………..
There’s a feller in the UK who miraculously ended up with the original Sun stamper for That’s All Right and pressed up some single-sided repros many moons ago. They are pretty good. The vinyl itself is of a higher grade than what Sun used, and of course they’re all pristine new pressings as well. It’s a great record I’m very happy to have, even if you still don’t get the B-side… it’s a pretty good half of a record to have. I figured that’s probably the closest I’m ever getting to a true original copy but maybe my luck will turn around.
Love that video.
; )
Nice
That’s all right with me.
