BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Iron Claw

Saga b/w Bright Future

scum stats: four different versions, mine is the simple black vinyl, but there's a lenticular cover version out there if you're nasty

Raw, gnarly and heavy. These recordings date back to 1970 and the vibe emanating off of them is both musty and massive. Cast in the figurative mold of Black Sabbath, it's charming to think that after the release of Ozzy and company's debut album, there were just countless numbers of unknown and never-to-be-known outfits jamming in garages and basements and attics that sounded just like this.

In terms of youthful teenaged aping and imitation of the musical flavor that's big and of-the-moment...this might be the pinnacle of that phenomenon. Kids trying to sound like the Beatles were numbers wise massive but, largely, forgettable. I'll grant that those who were SO bad and off the mark could actually be brilliant in the Back From the Grave style. I've been fond of mid-Eighties records that were made to sound like Prince but they are hard to find. And I'm surprised there's not more examples of early Nineties Nirvana soundalikes.

Kinda feels like we might not ever have that kinda pale impersonation response in modern times, the internet fully convoluting the idea of impression and reaction and inspiration, sometimes for the better, but here for the worse.

Kudos again to the Ancient Grease team, batting 1.000 here and well worth your time and effort investigating any and all of their efforts.

I highly recommend anything Ancient Grease puts out. Especially if you are into heavy 45’s!

I started buying lps in1972, if I remember correctly it was a Billy Preston lp . Why?/because I had just seen George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh and his performance stuck with me. I know, I know Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell and more but he got up and danced around. I don’t apologize for still getting my musical kicks from the PAST. When you think about it, when it comes to music there’s no past no future, as long as it’s human. I just hope my ears hold up. Keep up the great work Mr.Blackwell. ps my next lps bought were “hot rocks” “exile on main St.” Stones “killer " "schools out “Coop -”electric warrior " "the slider " T.rex WHY? because they got up and danced. Love yah unconditionally because you’re hearts in the right place. ✅️ you out later. John A.

Yes, it appears that Ancient Grease must have released all their work this year!! I usually don’t buy new, except TMR releases of course, but I may try to find these. They are not “Great” per music standards, but they are “GREAT” as an individual effort to tell their stories. I really like your Record of the Week it causes me to look in the dim corners for musical surprises! Thanks!!
