THREE YEARS OF DOING THIS WEEKLY RECORD THING HOLY SHIT!
As seems like I’ve made a tradition of, to celebrate my anniversary, I’m picking a platter from the venerable Soul Step Records to open minds to.
To me, this band sounds unique in an “inspired by Vampire Weekend but unaware of what inspired Vampire Weekend” sorta way. Most prevalently as the intro to “Shake You” but also with the liberal use of 80’s sounding synthesizers unironically.
The flip, “Make It By” gives me Future Islands vibes, soaring vocals, digitally delayed guitar voicing, lock-tight production. All in all…just wonderfully pleasant, accomplished in every way and something I respect, largely out of my understanding that I personally could never do it.
And as I do every year, I remind you faithful still clicking through here…SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS! Shit, support your NON-LOCAL independent record labels as well. They are the backbone of the true music out there. They may not ever end up with gold records on their walls, but the service they provide to their communities and to the deep, dedicated musicians of the world is absolutely incalculable.
Long live Soul Step!
Happy Third Anniversary!! I love this weekly step into the unknown, which I ultimately end up enjoying. Expanding musical horizons is never a bad thing! Costal Club is a very laidback jam; I’m digging it.
Soul Step has been putting out a lot cool stuff lately. I picked up their bumblebee yellow and black pressing of Brian Owens- “Soul of Furguson” yesterday. The wax mage variant sold out in less than a minute.
Thank you Ben. You are a saint for sharing!
Surely Melvin has a spare one for you ? mine looks fantastic and they generally sell out in less than a minute, so it’s fastest finger first.
Wow, three years? Very glad this feature has remained popular enough for you to keep doing it, much appreciated!
Thanks for this weekly record thing, I couldn’t even say how many bands and even genres of music you’ve turned me on to. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for sharing the cool wax Ben!
Happy third, Ben! Thanks for digging deep in the bins for us.
Thank you for doing this every week. I don’t remember when I started looking forward to this, all I know is that I do. Third man has introduced me to so many great artists. All your efforts are greatly appreciated!
LOVE Soul Step Records!
