THREE YEARS OF DOING THIS WEEKLY RECORD THING HOLY SHIT!
As seems like I’ve made a tradition of, to celebrate my anniversary, I’m picking a platter from the venerable Soul Step Records to open minds to.
To me, this band sounds unique in an “inspired by Vampire Weekend but unaware of what inspired Vampire Weekend” sorta way. Most prevalently as the intro to “Shake You” but also with the liberal use of 80’s sounding synthesizers unironically.
The flip, “Make It By” gives me Future Islands vibes, soaring vocals, digitally delayed guitar voicing, lock-tight production. All in all…just wonderfully pleasant, accomplished in every way and something I respect, largely out of my understanding that I personally could never do it.
And as I do every year, I remind you faithful still clicking through here…SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS! Shit, support your NON-LOCAL independent record labels as well. They are the backbone of the true music out there. They may not ever end up with gold records on their walls, but the service they provide to their communities and to the deep, dedicated musicians of the world is absolutely incalculable.
Long live Soul Step!
How do you become eligible?
May be my favorite write up yet. Happy third Ben!
TMR!! Wish i started my sub earlier….
The contests are the best, if a record shows up in the mail it’s just gravy, I just enjoy having an outlet to let stories fly. Cheers
I’m giving a speech on third man records contributions to art in my pro comm class today
I’ve been introduced to a lot of great local Cincinnati music and beyond through this label. In fact, I first became aware of it when standing in line behind the owner while we were waiting for the RRS to come to Shake It Records a few years ago, Olivia Jean played an in-store that day. I’ve been buying Soul Step Records ever since and am happy to continue to support this label that supports worthy musicians who might otherwise be overlooked. Looking forward to the next Brian Owens record that was just released on Saturday, “Soul of Ferguson!”
Love Soul Step. This record is amazing too!!
My favorite find via Ben is Westerbur & Rowe. Still waiting in their next release though.
