Lena Hughes
"Queen of the Flat Top Guitar"
scum stats: original pressing probably a couple hundred copies, i would LOVE one, but the reissue is a nice placeholder until someone pulls my name for Secret Santa
I'd been wracking my brain consistently for the past year or two trying to remember what in the hell this record was. All I could recall was an NPR story about a woman who played "parlor music."
Staring at the LP stacks not two minutes ago, looking closer than I usually do, this one just jumped out at me. Not only did I not recall ever buying, I certainly had no recollection of listening to it.
NPR can do a better job than me here (and was the way I had originally learned about this record), so check out what they have to say...
All I can say is that it just seems so damn odd to me that there's a legitimate concern of us losing (or never having documented?) sounds from the not-so-distant past. These beautiful, airy, room-filling, finger-picked tones here are perfect for an early morning listen looking out the window to a sunny day filled with possibilities.
I would join Liz in rolling down a hill into a meadow!!! Then I would dance around in my flowing summer dress!!! ?
this is great. thanks Ben!
Lovely song, now I want to hear Going To California by Zeppelin. Thanks for sharing!
off-topic but… HOORAY for Grammy-nominated Margo Price!!! ?
This is truly lovely.
yes would love to hear more!! Reminds of my friend Andrew Stephen Fergason.
So pretty
One of my favorites. I bought this one and Chris King’s American Primitive Guitar collection at the same time. Both go hand in hand for me. I’m just glad someone recorded her and reissued it as well.
""She was just the epitome of the attractive young lady who broke into the hairy-legged men’s world of fiddle playing,""
Kitten sleepily kneading your lap while the summer sun rises. My favorite yet, great find. (and looks like my Grandma) I grew up listening to this type stuff (Bert Jansch, etc), so it stirs a lot of memories for me. On the hunt now…
