Taylor Swift
1989
a billion copies, i'm sure of it
I'm slammed today, had to run home to help watch the girls and realize I did not do a write-up for ROW yet.
So I let Violet pick.
"Any record in the house Violet...you pick it and I'll write about it."
She goes straight to her jam. Between this and requests for Big Sean's "Bounce Back" and "Dance" from the Trolls soundtrack and (oddly) the Flaming Lips "She Don't Use Jelly", Violet has not veered too far from Swift's "1989" in the past 8 months or so.
I bought it for her on vinyl after she had a hard day at pre-K earlier this year. I'm such a sap.
I guess I've heard all the songs on this LP, but really, for V it begins and ends with "Welcome to New York." Intro'd to this family as the opening music for "The Secret Life of Pets", I've probably listened to this song no less than 150 times this year. I sing it to her, I pull up live versions on YouTube. I am a sap...if she loves something I can learn to love it myself.
A distant second is "Shake It Off" of which Violet appears to be more of a fan of the video than the song itself. I guess I don't mind it all in the grand scheme of things. If I've learned anything, it's that Taylor Swift music, from my perspective, seems to be made specifically for four year old girls. And I'm completely ok with that.
V still doesn't have a steady enough hand to drop the needle on this one, so it's already shredded. I doubt the White Stripes-branded Crosley helps the situation. Maybe she'll get a Manny under the tree this year.
And in the time it took me to write the last paragraph, V opened the dish washer, used that to climb on top of the kitchen counter, set the microwave for god-knows how long (50:35 when I found it) with nothing in it and was fist deep in a package of gummi bears.
I've clearly got my hands full.
That Trolls record plays non-stop at my house. Luckily occasionally I can talk my daughter into playing “Branch’s” solo record and we dance to some other Timberlake tracks.
ROW : )
note to Ben get her to record live in the Blue Room and TMR could sell a billion records too!
Dude, you are my hero! I teach kindergarten, 19 5-6 year olds this year! I always look for reasons to play music, during crafts, indoor recess, bday parties, etc. I totally agree with you, music SHOULD be for pure enjoyment. And of course little kiddos are still developing their aural palate. We made a school wide music video using the trolls “dance” song last year. I honestly had a blast! P.S.. I did manage to sneak in Prickly Thorn on St. Patrick’s Day! Thank you for being such an awesome dad!

I dig this week’s write-up, man. I have a little girl too, though not so little anymore. She’ll be 14 in February. She’s also a Swift devotee and I have also learned to love quite a bit of her music, especially from 1989. Ain’t no shame. Ain’t no shame.
You get T. Swizzle, I get Minecraft, Volume Alpha. Different sounds, but an introduction to music at a young age is all good! Thanks for the share!
Someday you’ll hear a Taylor Swift song and smile as you think “where has the time gone?” Britney Spears has a place in my heart for that very reason. Treasure these times, they go by far too fast.
:) Adorable!
