BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Imagination Anthem Volume 8: The Private Press

Don’t tell my wife that I’m currently back in the office writing this. I’m supposed to be getting the oil changed and the car washed. That’ll happen eventually. But this record is something everyone needs in their life. A collection of acoustic, vocal-less recordings of all completely unknown, primarily self-released artists is a dream. Liner notes are wonderfully in-depth and if you need only take away one thing from it all, it’s Joe Bethancourt’s completely transcendent “Raga” which is worth the price of admission alone. If I wasn’t compiling/pressing/overseeing four Vault packages a year I’d love to think that I’d be doing releases more along these lines. I’ve got some in the works, but damn this shit is hard and that’s all the more reason to appreciate the work put into this.

@durga yes Oliver Stone. Overall the movie itself is mediocre however Kilmer does all the vocals which is pretty badass cause he is spot on. I would put it in the same category as Walk the Line it was aight

Lisa Gros: Thanks for mentioning the others. I’ve got the first volume playing now, gonna work my way through chronologically.

I’ve listened to 8 then the first. I will be adding all of them to my vinyl treasure hunt list. Thank you for posting the album.

Awwww…Raga Retro…thanks ben…love that nose for music news!

Lisa Gros

I will to all seven tomorrow at the office. Anthem number five wasn’t listed. A possible treasure hunt in the near future.

DTMB, I think he meant pulling together a comp like that for a small indie label, or running a small indie label at all, is hard work. I need to check out that Val Kilmer scene. Is that from the Doors flick?

DonTazeMeBro

Following Durga’s lead i pulled it on Tidal. All due respect to Black and Mr. Bethancourt, I’m just not sure if “hard” is the adjective I would use to describe this, maybe “shroomy” or “groovy” I kept picturing Val Kilmer in the desert saying “ride the snake” it was aaight
