BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Chris Crown
“I Need Lovin” b/w “Hug Me”

Damn. This one is just straight-up odd.

Listening to it yesterday, from one room over, Swank messages and says “This song is scaring me.”

I agree. I just can’t figure out what in the hell is going on here. Feels like some “Grey Gardens”-type shit. Equal-parts long-con, delusion and “Florence Foster Jenkins”

Attached are pics and the only writing I could find about the release. The rest of the article is a TRIP. Is it illegal for me to share here?

Just…wow.

There’s a copy on eBay right now I will probably bid on just because. And evidence points to even another single “Hello Christmas Tree” and “Santa Song” which I NEED and anyone who finds/has one for trade will be rewarded handsomely.

I’m sure it won’t be long until someone pops up with the other single, let us know what that one sounds like as well. I saw that completed listing from December so there’s definitely hope to track one down.

well ben ….. i find it much more odd that a label of global stature still be plagued with wordpress reroutes and digital streaming interruptions from sites like pusher.com and openx.net on a regular basis that you locating some low budget greek rock mama but im glad you stepped up and responded with some reasonable rebuttal regarding the matter and think more of you for laying down some facts in the process… But honestly…. no matter how odd you might claim this track to be we all know the trutth given the vast oddness of the greek mountain music and even more diverse oddities on your label made in more modern times …….. i scarcely think if these naive tracks as odd…. maybe just a little brave and a lot more to the point in their message….. GET BEHIND ME SATAN…. These songs profess an honest exorcism of base level tempation in the life of some avante spiritual gal back in the rudementary recording days…. sure she has a background in other cultures that predispose her to acoustic sound…. Sure she talks about primal desire and likely wrote MY FATHERS IMPOSTER as some prototype for sacred and profane rocking against her Orthodox Christian Beliefs….. this aint no wolf eyes or trip rock and best be sure that Blues On Two Trees blows out these little home made vinyls for this for oddity when all is said and done given the fact that primitive by choice fascinates anyone with its greater effort at conundrum in design than true predictable primitive by way of limited resource or plain old joyful noise nearly every time…. Seriously … i didnt miss any of the markers along the way when i made the call that this felt like a slur on simplistic women artists ….. my assessment that you and Swank sizing this up as odd and scary knowing all that i and you know about the other wacky stuff on your label is a fair assessment…. i consider your particular style of reporting on this one to be a dashed off bit of tongue and cheek with less than sincere appreciation purely based upon your mention of Swanks feigned fright as a quick nudge nudge wink wink after raking in the dough in detroit at the expense of another long lost lady who played her heart and soul out for anyone to hear was a word to the wise…so…. we can agree to disagree on this one and enjoy the fact that we can have a listen and shake our heads in anticipation of yet another “mystifying find” that basically turn up by the millions when you head down the fervently religious road of extra money and access to vinyl novelty recording studios with one take capability…. more frightening for me were some of the old religious album covers and titles back in the day such as these http://www.eatliver.com/creepy-and-odd-christian-albums/ ….. http://www.sadanduseless.com/2016/01/awkward-christian-albums/ …..

wow wow wow

now i know why i get the occasional complaint about this place

neither myself nor swank are undercutting anyone here

no matter how you slice chris crown though, the music/singing/article are ODD. that is 100% inarguable. “my father’s imposter”? who comes up with that kind of shit? did anyone else even make an effort to find the rest of the article? or read any more about Chris Crown/Lucille Billings?

no judgement was being made as to the value or sincerity of the music. as a long-time fan of the shaggs, beat happening and any number of countless artists who “couldn’t play” technical prowess has never deterred my enthusiasm or excitement and i think history proves that. you know who signed the underwearheads? this guy.

i don’t think anyone ever considered meg’s performance “odd.” her drumming was definitely labeled as simplistic, childish, uncomplicated and even derided for being so. but those are all the qualities i absolute adore about her drumming. in case you’ve forgotten, please let me remind you that outside of pat pantano (stage left drummer in the dirtbombs) the drummer i’ve watched and listened to the most throughout my entire life is the beautiful miss meg white.

so i’m sorry Apple Blossom, but your accusation here is completely off-base. you usually have valuable insight on these posts, but you missed the mark on this one.

_AppleBlossom_

sorry Ben… you actually mentioned Meg … albeit a response …. the point is that you want to drag out this commentary and thats about you and your need to keep things going … i think youre more of a #JERKon as opposed to the #Rambleon promotion which you keep slingin

STL_Ben

Only one person here has mentioned Meg….and that’s you. #RambleOn

_AppleBlossom_

to be fair… i could see how StLBen might have taken my initial comment using ‘they’ in the context of the people making the music…. but the single and the article was not about a band so…let me give a nod to the notion that Chris Crown and her pious bunch would very likely not see anything wrong with Meg … Meg probably put up with a lot of this marginalizing humor in my opinion… all in good fun right???? its obvious as her story proves out i think we can see that Meg didnt want to have to wrestle with image or label big wigs deciding to make a running joke of her innocence relative to worrying if the White Stripes would end up in a joke of a thread like this…. so…its like that

_AppleBlossom_

i am clearly stating that Blackwell and Swank seem to be undercutting and marginalizing the sincerity and the the values which made Meg and the White Stripes such a genuine and unique approach to music at that time in history…. as far as I am concerned Chris Crown could be Mildred and the Mice or Stormy Hayworths distant relative or progenator…. dont twist my words StLBen…. i see why Meg lives so reclusively and separate from her legacy now
