BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Scantron

"Electric City" EP

scum stats: holy shit, SEVEN different versions?!?!?! I haven't felt this overwhelmed and debilitated by variation since I googled "Baby Yoda toy"

So a few weeks back the folks from Lazy Boy Record Company sent over a package with FOUR copies of this record. Included was a nice, heartwarming letter that said the three blue vinyl singles (limited to 100 copies) and the lone black vinyl copy (owner's variant, limited to 25, never to be sold) were being given TO MY DAUGHTERS to do with as they wanted.

MAYBE they would gift me the owner's variant. Maybe they would review it. Maybe they would give it away elsewhere. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE LIMITLESS.

My first thought was...do the 44 different owners of the Lazy Boy co-op know what it's like to try and coordinate ANYTHING between sisters the ages of seven, four, and two years old? I CAN'T EVEN GET THEM TO BED WITHOUT YELLING...AND YOU WANT ME TO TRY COORDINATE REVIEWS AND GIVEAWAYS AT THEIR BEHEST?

I wholly welcome the inspired Scantron form though..."Dreams" has a perfectly plodding tempo that just hits the spot, sly and devoted and leaving nothing left to be desired. With rock and roll, the thin line between pastiche and pantomime is consistently muddled, yet this feels undeniably TRUE. Letting up on speed for the accomodation of groove is a welcome equation and it proves to further serve the purpose on both "In There / Out There" and "Tip Top Inn." And shit, "White Linen Sheets" is strong too. I hear little (no?) weakness here. Four PURE songs, worth your time and your ears.

But as to the issue of these four copies sitting on my desk...I think I'm gonna just throw the three blue vinyl versions into the girls' collective 45 box. I'm keeping the black vinyl copy. That's the joy of pulling the rank of dad. Unless, you, the masses, ANYONE, can convince me as to some better approach, in the comments below. No doubt some of the co-op owners of Lazy Boy will be reading this and certainly are welcome to chime in.

Dare I suggest giving away these copies here? To Vault subscribing 45 collecting freaks, versus the secret slime spilling slobs that are my kids? Am I beholden to the unsolicited request of Lazy Boy? In terms of how I choose to parent my children? Should any randos fresh out of county jail be able to send me a surprise package and expect me to oblige their request? What is "love" anyway? Who are parents? As is my favorite directive to leave with...discuss.

LOL at the Baby Yoda toy joke; I actually did that same Amazon search and get it! The photo of you, Ben, is also damn funny; it’s not easy to fan out four singles and get the face right!

WeeBee, the less they know about your Venus and Mars album with the original stickers and posters the better for you! Don’t tell!

My 14 year old recently got her first record. She asked, and I obliged, to spin it on my record player (which has the TMR Vault slipmat on it BtW). Afterwards I asked her where she was going to put her records and she replied “just put them with yours.” Put them with my wall of records? “How will you find it?” “It’s okay dad, I want to start listening to your records anyway.” Whoo! I too have that Venus and Mars album! Hmmm, not too sure about that, but glad she’s taking up an interest!

I was half sold the second I saw that beautiful Rickenbacker on the cover… fully sold after a listen. good stuff. And, could’ve been worse if they’d sent three different variations to divide up between the kids. Who’s daddy’s favorite?

Let me reiterate … They still have custom blue copies available at the Lazy Boy Record Co. website. $12.50 shipped. Quit begging. It’s unseemly. shorturl.at/nrIW1

Just plumped for a clear copy, as most of the cool variants are sold out (they still have the translucent blue in stock, as well). Listened to it first; it’s really quite good and well worth your money, regardless of the collectible aspect. Also signed up for the LBRC e-mail so I won’t miss out on the next release. They looking for additional owners/investors?

thanks for telling me about lazy boy …and do whatever makes you feel joy, man

Most of the owners of Lazy Boy met socially through their love of TMR and all things vinyl, it’s a fantastic ep so share it with others Ben. There is a liquid filled variant that sold out as well.

Lazy Boy Record Co. is an amazing group of people. I’ve been trying to get an owners copy for a while. I mean hell, I’ll chip in just to get that! But seriously this is a great endeavor and they are great people. with that being said……I say you do a giveaway to the person that fawns over the great people that make up Lazy Boy Records the most. I own every record in their catalog and would love the great Mr. Blackwell in tandem with the great people at Lazy Boy gift me a copy. ?

I for one have these and can’t help to bounce around to them at high volume. Having a couple of kids myself, only one of them has any inkling of interest. She is my 9 year old and proud owner of one of those 3" record players (sadly not the TMR one). You see, my home is not the largest and so when Dad plays a record everyone in the house can hear it. Howecer, not sure about your kid situation on space and record player ownership. But, if the kiddos don’t want them maybe a few of your TMR employees would dig them!

Yo today’s my kid’s birthday. Send me one, I’ll give it to him. I’ll even play it for him.
I’ll send Ben or the dudes at Lazy Boy Records a Chumruckus 10".

Such a quandary… We here at Lazy Boy Record Co are leaning towards throwing caution to the wind and letting the outcome be swayed by the people. Best idea wins? But of course we relinquish our rights to you, we are merely a Lazy Boy and you are in fact a Third Man. And do you know what it’s like to coordinate 44 owners of a label? Yes, we are one uping you! We also want to note that the Owner’s copy is not all black. Take a closer look, there’s a little something special going on there.
