BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Co-Real Artists

(this is the only name I've ever known on this record, but I see Gordon Jackson, Anthony Green and Denise Jackson have specific named credit on the label, so I add that here)

"What About You (In the World Today)"

WOOOOO boy, did not EVER think that I would see an original of this let alone OWN it, but you know what, maybe 2020 ain't all that bad after all.

I've been hot on this song for almost twenty years, I first heard it in 2001 with its inclusion on the absolutely magnificent "Funky 16 Corners" compilation. Put it in my Discogs wantlist about a year ago. Saw a copy there for a WILD asking price and "Make Offer" option. Discerning the seller was from Michigan, I was able to get this for a song, trading copies of old weird Michigan records I'd stashed spares of, my total cash outlay being a mere fraction of what this disc commands on the open market.

This proto-hip hop, positive Black power anthem is PERFECT in every way. Unimprovable. I've said it before, but I'll repeat it forever...the stark beauty of just vocals and percussion is godhead. And "What About You" is one of the most stellar examples I can offer. Take this into the weekend and rest of the year and use it as I do...to get INSPIRED and MOTIVATED to GET SHIT DONE.

Another concert I attended around this time 89,90 at a small bar can’t remember the name but again memorable experience , David Lindley . I sat at a table in front of the stage with a friend. The musicianship of this band was eye and ear opening. I went to this show not knowing what to expect. I put this artist along side of Ry Cooder , I believe they made an album together. These types of musicians are disappearing in America. I don’t know what the point is here, just a memory , a good one.

It was about this time of year I went to a concert at a bar called Big Dogs, was around 91 92 . This place was made of brick and had two levels. This concert is one of the best I ever attended. The band King Swamp. I know one of the members of the band was in Gang of Four. Are they worth a listen on record? Sure, but they can come across as overly dramatic and commercial on record, but live it worked. I can remember my two friends I talked into going saying after the concert “I can’t believe I never heard of them”. Some bands have such a different feel live , weather it’s stretching out a song or rivaling in a chance to play your music in front of a crowd, this band could play their instruments and sing. That’s entertainment.

Never heard of the musical drama “Life” but I bet that Genie Jackson, Gordon Jackson and Denise Jackson are all related.
