BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Paul Nicholas

"Run Shaker Life"

Are there people out there who don't listen to b-sides?

I've never been that way, but I assume some folks out there don't bother flipping singles.

I can think of no better example as to why you ALWAYS need to listen to the b-side.

Nicholas is best known as a British actor but he also had a decent career as singer of tepid pop songs. Anyone vaguely familiar with him would glide RIGHT past this in a record bin without a second thought.

But for some reason, with the remarkable Alan Tew arranging, this cover of the Richie Havens adaptation of an old Shaker hymn is just transcendent. Percussion for days. A breakdown that smokes. Exquisite instrumentation. Blistering vocals as both lead and background. Perfectly deployed horn accents.

All under the name of an otherwise milquetoast singer, who seemingly has no business making a record this phenomenal. An original will cost you a pretty penny as diggers have figured this one out, but the Youtube clip does just as good a job of conveying the magic. Enjoy.

My nickname is B-side bahahaha. I listen to as much material as I can if I appreciate an Artist. It is an arduous task to write a song, why artist deserve to get proper compensation. I just completed a law class about intellectual property & have a degree in pharmaceuticals. Aside from people not paying for musical content, stealing intellectual property rights can cost an Artist/Company billions in dollars in a worst case scenario. The Artist/label also invest time, production costs, and marking plans to produce products that are not able to be an asset to society if they didn’t use their time and energy to create beautiful art. I have a lot less symothey for the evil pharmaceutical industry. The point of my MBA I am obtaining is to manage a department that is focused on drug development in an ethical fashion. Top drug manufacturers themselves have issues with morals, lobby for government officials, and kill people to simply pay them off as it’s the cost of doing business, even with FDA fines. Clinical trials are intriguing and can be run a million times by manufacturer trying to turn a potential drug discovery into a product for final approval to place on the market and the only data required by FDA are the studies that prove efficacy and safety in animals then humans and nothing else is published or turned over. Pharmaceutical companies pay the scientists doing the testing as well. They also hold no liability in the manufacturing of vaccines. This leads to adverse reactions and mortality and they are not responsible. Amazing how the government can have such a love/hate relationship with the drug companies, profits. Fine them then had over a billion dollars to conduct research. They also award government contracts to the companies that lobby politicians, costing the tax payers millions of dollars, like when they stockpiled cipro during the anthrax scare. They stockpile doses at 150.00 a pill. There was a generic manufacturer that made the same quality of drug faster for 10 dollars a pill. Johnson and Johnson are friends that make our baby shampoo for our children just remove formaldehyde from their list of ingredients, broke several world treaty agreements, and paid off the Iraq government particularly Saddam Hussein. They fueled the opioid epidemic and the government cut them a break, as many judges help them out to reduce criminal charges and settlements won in court, that’s nothing google their corporate crimes. The federal government lumped all the charges together, and gave them a reduced fine to resolve the matter. Who pays for jail, most rehabs, and education programs to deter opioid use. Taxpayers. Well they are the top manufacturer of prescription medication and medical devices in the country worth around 565 billion dollars. The arduous MF’s. If you google them read several sites most only list like 20 of their crimes, like improper medication levels in baby medications. They are great at marketing. A judge called them “America’s Most loved criminals” Profits are a good thing, it allows us to enjoy things like Art or their would not be a way to afford to produce it, but there comes a time when a corporation gets incredibly greedy and unethical. I hope to implement a little ethical responsibility when I am working in my new field. I have a GED and found all this information lol. Two yr pharmacy technician degree allows for a good salary, I am glad I went back to college. Don’t steal music, or we won’t have any. I read a lot about Jack is too picky at his performances, I would be as well. All the work, money and energy to create the music and a good show, especially since he is one of the few performers that are better live, he should. Their is not a ton of profitability in touring on it’s own. When you buy merch and tickets you are supporting the aritis to be allowed to tour and create this music. He especially could make a considerably larger amount of profits, to run a label is expensive in itsself. He not a sell out and it’s not what it’s about.

I could listen to an isolated drum track of this and b satisfied .One of my favorite besides growing up is /These Days/ by Joy Division from the/love will tear us apart/ 12" release . As each year passes I still find myself listening to this band for what ever reason and it’s not morbid it’s joy. Joy in the fact they did it/ they made this it’s alive and in my house still spinning. God bless the fallen my their spirits be forever placed amongst the stars.
