Angel Bat Dawid
Transition East b/w No Space Fo Us
scum stats: 333 copies on "outer space gray" vinyl bundled with "Make Some Space" book and broadside, undisclosed number of copies on gray vinyl without bundle, undisclosed number of copies on black vinyl
Picked this up on one of those Bandcamp fee free Fridays. Both these pieces feel more "together" and my speed than what I recall from her LP, which I still very much enjoyed. A-side drum machine is welcome for the unique impression it casts across the harmonic interaction of multiple clarinets. And the subtle organ backing fills in just enough to still feel simple.
B-side is much more FULL ON, three percussionists, three piece horn section, bass, piano...this thing winds up nigh metronomically and then unfurls into an unpretentious storm of expression, from about 2:54 to 3:15. Not too much. Just enough.
I guess I didn't NEED the bundle here, I have no way I can envision actually keeping all three components "together" and am unsure when the universe will crack open enough time for me to even consider a book.
As much as I dig it, I still imagine that Angel has something bigger, better, more grandiose and impressive that she's waiting to unleash. The slow tease of material may seem calculated, but damned if it hasn't been holding my interest.
Thanks for the heads up! Really enjoy her music and spirit. Ordered 3 for sharing
I liked Transition East but not so much on Angel Bat Dawid-no space for us. The disjointed horns was a little unnerving. I understand that is a jazz freestyle form but not for me.
