BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Muriel Grossmann

“Golden Rule”

scum stats: limited to 200 copies

OH BOY!

I’ll be the first to admit I do not know shit about jazz music. Never really understood it, had extreme difficulty “connecting” with it…just failed to laser through into my skull.

Well, I dig Alice Coltrane alright, but for some reason that stands out in a way that feels non-jazzy to me. I don’t really know how to explain it.

But this Muriel Grossmann record is blowing my mind. I grabbed it because it’s on the estimable RR Gems label…an imprint who’s track record is impeccable. A label where I own a copy of everything they put out.

But I had slept on this one and didn’t get the urge until AFTER they had sold out of the admittedly limited 200 press run.

Tracked one down more expensively than I would’ve liked, but shit, it is sooooo worth it.

Swank tells me it hits on a lot of the production and phrasing cornerstones of the John Coltrane oeuvre. I know enough to be able to say that the cover looks like a golden age Impulse album cover.

Add to it the fact that Muriel is a white Austrian female saxophonist who absolutely nails it…well, that’s all the more reason to dig it.

Apparently there’s a repress coming, so don’t blow all your dough trying to track down one…yet. But I do urge ALL of you to check it out on streaming.

My enthusiasm for this album knows no bounds. It is THAT good. I just hope this isn’t the domino that ultimately finds me trying to track down original deep-groove Blue Note pressings. Cause jazz collecting is a whole other beast.

I tend to like certain pockets of jazz music. Often few and fair between, but this is quite nice.

I don’t know why but this reminds me of Sun Ra. I’m not a big jazz head also but this sounds nice. Maybe as a non specific jazz lover you should check out Annette Peacock’s I’m The One, a really great experimental jazz album

Wait a second, Ben…you’re into dissolving pills in water (Substance) but not jazz? Dang, but I guess none of us can be interested in, have, or listen to it all; there isn’t enough time in a day, a week, a life! My vinyl jazz collection is decent…much Miles, decent Coltrane (hubby and wife), and even a decent collection of big band legends. I must admit my favorite “jazz” label used to be ECM. Many of the original artists have moved on, but wiki them and check out some greats like Keith Jarrett, Eberhard Weber, Terje Rypdal; in fact you can’t go wrong with any of the artists listed. I have a fairly sizable ECM vinyl collection, but the good news is many of the original albums now stream on Spotify (added within the last year). As the Wiki points out “ECM’s artists often refuse to acknowledge boundaries between genres”.

@petzmark That’s good info—most of my jazz collection is on CD, including the Blue Note releases, I’ll have to investigate that.

Ben, the new Blue Note “Tone Poet” reissue series is offering some excellent pressings/packages of under-appreciated titles from their back catalog at a very comfortable price point. No need to hunt down the original deep-groove pressings (although I know it’s hard for you to NOT do that sort of record hunting). I’m not a big buyer of jazz, but this program, started early this year, has me hooked.

*limited to 400 according to their site. The blue note domino fell for me and it’s been an expensive, but fun, ride.
