This is a book meant to make a difference; proceeds from every sale of Acknowledge: An Anthology of Selected Poems from The Contributor will be donated to the street paper The Contributor. Acknowledge gives voice to our homeless neighbors. Voices that will fill you with warmth, sadness, courage, and much, much joy. For instance, how could a raccoon become so important? Ever know a dog named Sneakers? What exactly is a "Cadillac turn"? Heard of a Sunflower Hubcap?
"ACKNOWLEDGE: An Anthology of Selected Poems from The Contributor collects poems from the seven years that The Contributors’ poetry section has been published. The writers are the homeless and formerly homeless vendors of the street paper located in Nashville, TN. The vendors are old and young, man and woman, both native to Nashville and not. The poems present human perspectives on homelessness and daily life in the words of those most affected. Our intention at Third Man Books is, of course, to bolster awareness of The Contributor and raise funds for its vendors. We encourage all to continue to purchase papers from vendors whenever possible."—Joshua Gillis, editor
"Since its first issue in 2007, The Contributor, located in Nashville, Tennessee, has published poetry by Contributor supporters, homeless advocates, and most notably the homeless and formerly homeless vendors who sell the street newspaper. Vendor poetry became a part of my life when I joined its staff as the editorial assistant at the end of 2011. For years, I typed up poetry written on fast food napkins, crisp notebook paper, and stained scraps of flyers, receipts and medical documents. I read poetry emailed from downtown library computers, mailed from Pennsylvania typewriters, and scribbled in marker five minutes before we closed our doors for the day. I’ve always preached that our poetry section is the most powerful and interesting work within The Contributor pages because of both the brash honesty and the opportunity for empowerment." —Linda Bailey, assistant editor at The Contributor.

I don’t know if this link will work for everyone since it comes from Facebook, but I want to try to share it here anyway— https://www.facebook.com/streetsensedc/videos/10153773883711941/?theater It’s a profile of Eric Thompson-Bey, a vendor of DC’s homeless newspaper, Street Sense. Every other Thursday, he’s on the corner outside where I work and I buy a paper from him. If that link works and y’all have time to watch it, it is a wonderful example of why this book, Acknowledge, is so important. This book is something that every Vault member should have in their Third Man Records/Books collection. Fuck colored vinyl, buy this.
Chet’s notes are the best. Love that he uses a replica of Frank Stanford’s stationary. Got my chapbook tonight and turned directly to Waffle House Women ‘cause there are two Waffle Houses up here in MD that I frequent just because of the women there and ’cause I have extremely fond memories of one Halloween night at Waffle House in Nashville (the one on Nolensville Pike, though, not Murfreesboro Road). Then I glanced over at Old Joe on the next page and next thing I knew, I had tears in my eyes. Don’t think I’ll be able to read this book on the subway. It’s beautiful, Third Man, and you all are beautiful for doing it.
Chet wrote a lovely thank you note to me when I purchased “Hidden Water”. It was so heartfelt and expressed how important support was to small printing presses. It pretty much insured that I will directly support TMB.
Special thanks to Chet who included a hand written note (that included a fine drawing of a horse) that arrived with my copy of Acknowledge. Really appreciate you all do at TMR and TMB.
Love a good cause… Count me in after next subscription renewal
I will definitely eventually buy a copy of this book and support the cause. TMR and TMB is growing so fast and issuing so much great stuff, but my discretionary funds are not sufficient to keep up. I want every book in the TMB collection.
I so wish I could have been there. What an amazing and powerful evening!
Peace~Love~TMR
I agree with Me. Durga, and just ordered my copy. Good on you, TMR!
