Tim Kerr art show and Poetry Sucks!

Tim Kerr art show and Poetry Sucks!

We'll be releasing a lot more information about this project in the coming months, but wanted to hip our hippest fans (you guys) to a cool event we have coming up in July in our Blue Room.

It will be our first ever "art show" and we'll be featuring one of the absolute heroes in the punk rock / rock n roll underground overground world of everything that is positive and cool... Mr Tim Kerr. If you are not familar with the background of Mr Kerr, I've included some information below. But suffice to say, his influence is huge. Tim is a full time painter these days and it's his paintings we'll be featuring at Third Man that first week of July in our blue room.

The art show will culminate on July 7th with our first presentation of the monthly Nashville based Poetry Sucks! event here at Third Man. We'll have some great readers in, as well as music from Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires not to mention Tim Kerr w/ Holly Golightly. Art, music, the love of language... It's going to be a really beautiful day.

POETRY SUCKS! AT THIRD MAN RECORDS: AN ART RECEPTION, MUSIC CONCERT, AND POETRY READING * Sunday, July 7 * MATINEE (5PM) * Third Man Records * 623 7th Ave S Nashville, TN 37203 *

Tim Kerr will exhibit his paintings at TMR in early July, climaxing with a reception on July 7 featuring poetry by Sampson Starkweather, Larry O. Dean, and Paige Taggart. All three poets come to Nashville in support of new books. The reception will also feature sets of music by both Lee Bains III and The Glory Fires and the indomitable Holly Golightly.

Here's some details on the performers for July 7th:

Tim Kerr was a founding member of The Big Boys, Poison 13, Bad Mutha Goose, Lord High Fixers, and Monkey Wrench; all groups who have played an important role in what is known as the US indie scene today. Not only has he been inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame, but Tim also earned a degree in painting and photography at the University of Texas in Austin and studied the latter with Garry Winogrand. His artwork has shown in the US and abroad in galleries such as PS1 in New York, 96 Gillespie in London, Slowboy Gallery in Germany, and Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago. Tim may even join in the music making on the 7th!

Sampson Starkweather was born in Pittsboro, NC. He is the author of the First Four Books of Sampson Starkweather and 5 chapbooks from dangerous small presses. He is a founding editor of Birds, LLC and works for The Center for the Humanities at The Graduate Center, CUNY. http://www.everyday-genius.com/2012/10/sampson-starkweather.html

Paige Taggart lives in Brooklyn and is the author of 3 chapbooks. Trembling Pillow Press will publish her first full-length collection Want For Lion in late 2013/early 2014. She's an avid jeweler (mactaggartjewelry.com) and co-founded the tumblr Poets Touching Trees. http://www.bookslut.com/features/2011_04_017492.php

Larry O. Dean was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. His most recent books include Brief Nudity(Salmon Poetry, 2013), and Basic Cable Couplets (Silkworms Ink, 2012). Also a critically-acclaimed songwriter, Dean has numerous CD releases, including Fun with a Purpose (2009) with The Injured Parties. He was a 2004 recipient of the Gwendolyn Brooks Award. http://salmonpoetry.com/details.php?ID=282&a=233

Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires’ debut album There is a Bomb in Gilead was released on Alive Records. Now, LBIII and The Glory Fires re-unite with Tim Kerr to record their next album in Nashville, TN with the legendary Jeremy Ferguson at Battle Tapes Recording Studio. Could there be a bigger bang? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk7NWoZOncE

Holly Golightly kicked off her musical career in Thee Headcoatees, the legendary all-girl garage band, closely affiliated with U.K. cult legend Billy Childish. She released her first solo record, The Good Things, in 1995. Holly has also recorded with Rocket from the Crypt, White Stripes, Mudhoney, and on the title track for the Jim Jarmusch movie “Broken Flowers” with The Greenhornes. Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs music is a lo-fi stew of blues, country and rockabilly, at once avant-garde and old-timey. http://www.hollygolightly.com/

Ahhhh!!! All of this good stuff, and Holly’s gonna be there, too? North Carolina feels so far from Tenn when I can’t make it to events like this…here’s to wishing I were there!

Zachary Thomas

This is being recorded live…should we expect black & blue splits? Or will the recording show up at a later date?

Kali Durga

Would be pretty amazing if you could get Edgar Oliver to come back to TMR to do a Poetry Sucks event. But if you do, please schedule it at a time when I can be there too, ok?

Ben Swank

Hi Mark, it’s free for entry. Opens on the 3rd and runs to the 10th. The event on the 7th is free as well.

Mark Robbins

I want so much to attend this! Are tickets available?

Was thinking about a road trip to Nashville in July anyway, guess this is as good a time as any.

Can’t wait to see the pictures for this since I can’t be there in person; sounds like an absolute blast!

Ivana

Oh Tam :-( I saw this and immediately thought of how much you would love to be there. I mean, I would be there in line now if I lived down there, don’t get me wrong… Sigh….

It’s so very exciting to see y’all turning into an all-round arts venue, makes me wish more than ever that I could get there more than once or twice a year. But what are you gonna have at your Poetry Sucks to replace Dino’s burgers?
