SXSW BAND PREVIEW EXTRAVAGANZA!!

Hello good people of the Vault population... how's everyone doing?

This guy right here is pretty excited about what we have going on at SXSW this year.. The pop up shop is going to blow some minds (you wouldn't expect less), and the live music line-up features a great mixture of Third Man artists, and non-TMR related current rock n roll that moving us in a big way. Lot of blood, sweat and tears (the bodily fluids, not the band) went into getting this thing together, so I really hope you all come out and enjoy the many fruits of our many labors. We've put this together in a way that you really don't have to do anything else at SXSW.. We're a little bit out of downtown (But not TOO far) so you can avoid all that madness, we'll have food trucks, free refreshments (normal drinks AND booze), art, commerce, music, DJs, Rolling Record Stores, and all kinds of good vibe stuff going on. And we're live streaming it all for you too (which incidentally is why we're calling it WTMR... classic radio style).

So, I thought I'd go day by day and break down what we have coming your way in case everyone isn't as familiar with these bands / readers / shenanigans as we are. Today we bring you...THURSDAY, MARCH 13th.

So first things first, the shop has the grand opening at noon. We have LOTS of awesome SXSW specific merch for you as well as so so many exclusives which we'll be rolling out every day (we'll give more details on what is coming and when next week... gotta tease this out!).

At 1pm once you've hopefully got your shopping done (new POS system running on ethernet should mean faster then ever check-out) head into the venue where we'll be hosting a small selection of readers from our first ever book, Language Lessons Vol. 1. LLV1 (as it shall now be known) is a poetry, essay, fiction, art and music anthology co-edited by (shameless plug) yours truly, and Chet Weise. We're very proud of this project, and excited to tell you more about it soon. It'll officially be released in April for National Poetry Month. SO, we'll have a selection of readers from the Anthology such as Dan Boehl, Cindy St. John, Daniel Lucca Pujol, and Chet Weise. I highly recommend checking all these brilliant writers out, but here's a sample poem / video from Chet.

We decided to go "easy" on the first day of live music and we've only plugged in three KILLER bands starting at 4pm. We've partnered for Thursday with a label we really love called Paradise of Bachelors. Two of our bands on Thursday are on their label and the POB dudes will be responsible for the DJ wheels of steel through the evening.

Promised Land Sound you likely know already from their Third Man live 45, but these are one of Nashville's best up and comers. Ragged, rootsy and so overburdened with hooks it's like some kind of southern fried tackle box (yeah. i just said that). They kick things off at 4pm. Followed at 5pm by TMR's own Haden Triplets bringing their Americana sweet charms and sisterly close harmonies to the MOHA stage. Excited for Third Man fans to get a taste of the triplets on the live stage. Just after HT wraps it up, Steve Gunn (another POB guitar slinger) will close out the party. Steve Gunn, formally of Kurt Vile's Violators, rips the pages out of the Takoma songbook and crumples them into fractured avant-groove pieces. His latest album, "Time Off", is a bold step into a more structured vocal driven songcraft for him, but the style remains completely his own. This is a must have record, and a must see show at SXSW.

NOW... a couple other things TMR related that are going on around Austin on Thurs the 13th. The Rolling Record Store will be out and about. You can find where they'll be at RIGHT HERE, but we recommend just checking them out the next day at the pop up shop where they'll be parked all day. You won't miss any exclusives from the RRS if you don't go see them on Thursday. We're also participating in a Record Label Rummage Sale with our buds from Amphetamine Reptile and Sub Pop Records. We'll have some screen printed

@BenSwank Thanks for the honest reply. I agree it is special!
See you next month! \m/

I agree with knowxvle. this is great, but makes me sad that nothing ever happens close to where i live, let alone anyway to use the benefits of a tmr membership. Feeling like a manipulated sucker…

Just trying to imagine seeing all those bands and hanging out with some of my pals at the sub pop rummage sale (which is impressive when you think about what you might stumble onto in and of itself) ….but all I can really do is imagine those cotton candy flavors melting in my mouth…. holy hell that habenjero makes me think I would be drinkin like a fish…ha …. bring it to Louisville TMR…. heck yeah!

Stacelings

You don’t need to own something to appreciate it. I like to know all these things exist and they are out there…but I really would like that black coffee cotton candy I cannot tell a lie.

Christine

Is this fantastic TMR set-up, hopefully, going to be a yearly occurrence?

Cathryn

Sadly, I won’t be able to make SXSW – but it looks like it’s going to be a hell of a lot fun for those going! Nice line up and really nice that you are live streaming the music!

ROJA
