RECORD STORE DAY 2016

RECORD STORE DAY 2016

Both retail locations open from 10am - 6pm

It's time again for the most beautiful time of the year... Record Store Day! Every year we here at Third Man Records Vinyl & Electrical Concern do our best to keep our fans and the populace at-large on their toes with a bevy of surprise releases and a TMR compound-wide event that is always sure to dazzle and delight. Well folks, this year will be no exception. However, Record Store Day is about nothing if not RECORDS, so let start by talking about the wax you'll want to weigh down your record shelf this April 16th...

The White Stripes - Peel Sessions Double LP

At both our Nashville and Detroit locations as well as a record store near you, we present the first-ever official release of The White Stripes Peel Sessions on 2 stuffed-to-the-brim discs, one red, one white. Capturing Jack and Meg at the precipice of international renown in the hubbub of “White Blood Cells," their two live sessions with famed BBC DJ John Peel are arguably the best document of the White Stripes at that time. Having been widely bootlegged since their initial broadcast in 2001, these recordings are enjoying their first authorized release in celebration of their 15 year anniversary. The standard black vinyl version of this release will be available later this year.

Jack White - "You are the Sunshine of my Life" Limited Edition 7"

Again, only available at Third Man Nashville and Third Man Cass Corridor it's Jack White's version of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of my Life" on It's Not Easy Being Green Colored Vinyl™. This exclusive 7" single includes White's cover from his appearance on their show earlier this Spring with the legendary Muppets house band, The Electric Mayhem, on the a-side, plus the special TV rendition, featuring the rest of the Muppets singing along, as the b-side.

Kate Pierson - "Venus" b/w "Radio in Bed" Blue Series 7"

Available on black vinyl in fine record stores EVERYWHERE, the Kween Goddess from The B52's herself performing two Jack White-produced tracks as the latest edition in our stellar Blue Series. Check out the Brad Holland directed video for "Venus" right here, right now, and put this on your "must have" list for the high holiday of music lovers everywhere.

  • 2:30 - Casual Sweetheart // Detroit Indie-rock at its best - clever, thought-provoking lyrics, happily distorted guitars, and slick bass lines. A boundary-pushing blend of psychedelic punk and avant-garde garage rock.
  • 3:30 - Birdcloud (backed by Liquor Store) /// Jasmin Kaset and Makenzie Green, a pair who met in a place called Murfreesboro, TN and who, since 2009, have used things like booze and sacrilege to make very modern, edgy country music.
  • 4:30 - Liquor Store /// To list this New Jersey band’s credentials is simply giving you a rundown of some of the finest acts of the past decade’s rock underground – Home Blitz, VCR, Livefastdie, Terrible Twos, Titus Andronicus. LS may very well be the only REAL rock'n'roll band in existence today, or at least the only one with enough balls and attitude to be as true to the form as they are.
  • 5:15 - DJ Jordan Bronk till close

Stand by for additional announcements including exclusive merchandise and, who knows, we might have an out-of-this-world surprise for you too... See you April 16th!

Anyone have any luck from their local stores as far as the Peel delay? If so what’s your location?

Alabama_Leigh

Addendum: I wrote that last post because I realized that the copy of GBMS I have that a friend bought for me last year would have been my only shot since another release was never available. She had to work this year, so we both missed out. I understand the special value of RSD, and I’m not asking to be spoon-fed or whatever it is someone mentioned, I’m just asking for online availability because I literally have no other option this year AND for the forseeable future. It feels like RSD is turning into Black Friday, and you folks participated in that last year, no?

I’d like to echo some of the sentiments here in regards to those of us in more rural, suburban, or international areas not being able to access RSD releases in-store. I’m not only ridiculously far from any physical record store, I am recovering from surgery and looking at another next week, so travel is out of the question. I’m not asking Argentina or anyone else to cry for me, but I would love to purchase these records, and not even necessarily in cute colours. Peel’s sessions with Pulp and PJ Harvey are two of my favourite works, so I have no doubt these LPs are excellent. I also never seem to get to the releases in the Vault on a Monday morning that sell out in ten minutes, so maybe another Vault membership incentive could be exclusive online access to RSD releases available during the same hours the store holds? That would be excellent and so very appreciated for many fans thrilled by the music but not thrilled with eBay being our only option. Thanks X

There are certainly lots of people that were so excited about getting the RSD releases that they ran right home to put them on EBay……shameful!

Called my local store on Thursday, they claimed they got in 1 copy of the peel sessions. Go stand in line for 2 hrs today. Asked where it was at once I got inside and they owner claimed they hadn’t gotten any in. Something fishy about that….

My local store in Wisconsin said they had and sold out of the Jack White Green single? Is that possible? I thought it was only going to be at TMR…

Personally I think record store day has become a joke. I have been buying vinyl where ever possible from independent retailers for over 20 years. I subscribe to 4 online vinyl clubs. And even now I have reached 40 I am always trying to find new bands I like so I can their records and support them. But because I live in a city with no independent record shop and it would be 3-4 hour round trip visit one, even if I could get the day off work. I am excluded from buying records by bands I first saw play in back on pubs from record shops who I buy 80% of my records from. At least I am lucky enough to afford to pay resellers prices but don’t blame anyone who just downloads free FLAC copies from the internet. Sorry rant over can’t wait for my vault package. X

Missed out again this year. Guess I’ll have to pay above the odds again like last year :(

No luck in picking one up. My two local stores got none. Was working in Stirling today and asked the store there – they got none. The Glasgow and Edinburgh stores who did get copies have confirmed they sold them all. Not paying flipper prices on ebay so will have to wait and see if anyone has any left when RSD stock is sold online next weekend.
