BLACKWELL'S RECORD OF THE WEEK

Jack Kittel

"Psycho"

scum stats: I bet this was 100 copies as I can't find any visual evidence of it anywhere

My introduction to this song was as a suggestion that 2 Star Tabernacle would cover it as part of their proposed album backing Andre Williams. Through what I only understood as "weirdness" in the studio scheduling, the Sadies ended up backing Andre for what would eventually become the "Red Dirt" album. I always felt like that was the metaphorical death knell for Two Star, but that's a story for another day.

Of particular intrigue in this song is that there's a mention of a "Jackie White" which was supposedly the name of songwriter Leon Payne's steel guitar player at the time the composition developed. Furthermore, the mention of Miller's store was coincidental as 2 Star bandmates Dan and Tracee have the last name Miller. It was clearly meant to be.

Anyway, this version of "Psycho" is probably the best known, so I find it odd that its original issue is not yet archived on the Discogs database.

So dig in and truly soak up the haunted, dark country vibes on this classic. And as a matter of me enjoying myself, I'm gonna spend the time to properly get this sucker cataloged on Discogs because that's what I do for fun.

Nice find you got there. Brooks Nielsen of The Growlers does a cover of this song.

There is a photo of it on Discogs but no one claims to own it. It is a very good “psycho” billy sound. You can send me yours; I have been looking for one :) Nice find!!!
