Invasion of the Cuckoo Brains
scum stats: 107 copies on magenta/pink vinyl, 159 copies on black vinyl
I appreciate the occasional heads-up I get from artists we've previously worked with at Third Man as to their latest endeavors. It's a good reminder that people are still alive, that life goes on, that creativity is always an evolution, happening in different forms and timelines and disciplines.
From the ashes of Blue Series alumni We Are Hex comes Cussy...solid dirty bass and wheezy keyboard interplay underpinned with mechanically wonderful drum cadence. Standouts for me are "Wombat in the Garden" all jacked Suicide-like attitude and snarl. "Purposely Faded" is a bastard offspring of some twisted Dead Weather experiment, all fuzz corruption and killer percussion. The beautifully-titled "Sandwich Shop Girls (Oh Golly)" spouts a sick, slimy, synthesized hook...just grooving for days. And album closer "Full Day of Cussing" brings it all to a splendid climax finish.
I guess since no one has high school reunions anymore and I'm not on Facebook this is as close as I will get to the "so what you been up to?" convo with that chosen extended family. Cussy is doing quite well and is worth checking in on. Get it.
